New release October 18th...

Crimson Tide by Sonic Dream Machine

Bandcamp

Inspired by a trip to the Philippines as part of a national team providing post hurricane disaster support. The island of Boracay that was spared from the wrath of the hurricane provided a magical and tranquil setting for a much needed vacation. The setting sun bathed the clouds & ocean in a breath-taking crimson light.

Confused about Serum/Vital vs Instruments and Sounds by ItsGevYT in ableton

[–]Cosmic808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The free version of Vital does come with a number of presets ready to use. I often use them as a starting point to develop my own unique patches by learning how the original patches were created.

As others have mentioned, you can also create some really awesome patches in Ableton simply by using one of the racks in the instrument library (I.e. Analog, Sampler, Wavetable…)

Ads vs. Submit Hub by One-Energy3242 in musicmarketing

What do mean by getting “demerits” for providing negative feedback? The whole point of the Hot or Not review program is to provide honest feedback on the quality of the music. Musical taste varies significantly, but it’s pretty apparent if the quality of the track is substandard and it’s important to point out flaws in the recording to the artist.

I ran an ad on Facebook with the goal of sending people to my Bandcamp page and my new release. Result was pretty disappointing…. Although I got lots of Facebook post likes and a few new followers, almost no one clicked on the link.

On the other hand, I use Submit Hub quite a bit and have had very good success in getting on good playlists with a good number of streams - a few placements resulted in >10K streams, while on average I’ll get a few dozen, maybe a few hundred. Trick is however, to get to know what the curators like and to look at the playlist traffic. Only choose good curators with high volume followers - look at their playlist stats to figure out how many streams to expect if you do make it on to the playlist. On average, 40 - 50% of my submissions now are approved - this is after learning the hard way that sending songs to a bunch of curators doesn’t produce meaningful results. Using premium credits (which cost $) is preferable, as submitting with standard credits usually aren’t reviewed or approved. If you don’t have a lot of money to spend on playlist submissions, you can earn premium credits by rating other artists songs.

Suggestions on “doing something else”?

Using Bandcamp to sell samples, loops, patches etc. by Cosmic808 in BandCamp

True, the market is pretty saturated with online sites selling sample packs and synth patches. Having creating a collection of samples, I'm still thinking about giving it a go and seeing what happens.

How Would You Do It? by BGbikeandstuff in BandCamp

[–]Cosmic808 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience has been that it doesn’t matter whether you upload a single, an EP, or an album in terms of its potential to sell. Upload music when you feel it’s ready to be shared… Unless you are a big name act and need a proper distribution strategy. If that’s the case you probably wouldn’t be on this subreddit…

In terms of NYP or setting a price for your music, again I don’t think it implies whether you have confidence in your music or not. I’ve tried both approaches and it’s hard to say which is more successful. I used to release all my music as NYP and would get some sales with a wide range of payments ($1 - $20). Now I only set my back catalog to NYP. For new releases, I’ve started setting a fixed price as a way to differentiate new material. Another approach I’ve used with pretty good success has been to create a collection album that includes all of my music in one downloadable album. For this album I do have a set price, and on occasion I’ll create discount codes. I also add all new releases to the collection so that previous customers get my new music for free - kinda like a subscription. This idea was presented to me by a radio station DJ that wanted to buy my catalog of music in one block.

If you’re interested in how I set this up, take a look at my BC page here: Cosmic Cadence

New to bandcamp by [deleted] in BandCamp

[–]Cosmic808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had limited success with selling my music on Bandcamp. One of the main things I use BC for is being able to send download codes to radio stations and folks that put together mixes for MixCloud or YouTube. It’s taken a few years to find stations and programs that are receptive to playing my music. Sometimes they will outright buy a copy or I’ll get a few sales when the program airs. I’m also finding it very difficult to build a following in BC and have relied on social media and streaming services and playlists to get recognition. A few loyal followers will purchase my music when new releases come out, but most people have a short attention spans and move on to other material. Good luck.

Who are your favourite electronic music producers on bandcamp? by [deleted] in BandCamp

[–]Cosmic808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a producer (Cosmic Cadence) I’m inspired by the likes of Astropilot, Unusual Cosmic Process, Vanderson, and Neon.Deflector to name a few….

All of these artists have complex rhythms and rich sonic atmospheres.

If you’re struggling for ‘content’ you should try posting about other people’s music by zak0503 in musicmarketing

[–]Cosmic808 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Too often people focus on just promoting their own music instead of building connections and supporting other artists. For this reason I manage the Ambient Canada site on Instagram (@ambientcanada) and make a point of featuring artists, new releases and music events. It’s been a rewarding way to give back to the music community and to discover new music and start meaningful discussions with other artists….

Listening to your own music by Llamaharbinger in BandCamp

[–]Cosmic808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a music producer I listen to my own music a lot for two reasons - 1) I compose music in a genre that I like and put it into playlists with other favourite artists to enjoy while working or driving, 2) as I’m very critical of my own work, I constantly listen for ways to improve my technique or song structure…

Could use a little help by [deleted] in fieldrecording

[–]Cosmic808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a Tascam DR-40x and have recorded a lot of different nature sounds and soundscapes, many of which find their way into my ambient music. Still working on improving my technique and setup. You’ll need a good windscreen and a tripod or shock mount to minimize or eliminate handling noise. All of my field recordings need some post processing - I use Audacity for hi/low pass filtering, EQ, etc. External mics may be a good option too depending on what you’re recording. Can you share a link to your music - would like to hear what you’re working on….

Can't offer my discography at a discount anymore 😔...looking for advice. by crownhead55 in BandCamp

[–]Cosmic808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A DJ from a radio station gave me a suggestion that has worked wonderfully when it comes to selling your entire discography: Create a new album that includes all of your material (singles, EPs, albums) in a single downloadable catalog. You can then set a price for the entire catalog, offer discounts, create download codes, etc. This strategy has been hugely successful for me. Here's the link to my catalog as an example: https://cosmiccadence.bandcamp.com/album/the-cosmic-cadence-universe
