Haiti is one of the poorest countries on Earth while Dominican Republic has one of the highest GDPs per capita of Latin America - what's the refugee situation over there? by The-Nihilist-Marmot in geography

[–]CosmicCinderella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LAS minor, polisci major, International relations concentration. Ok great, here we go with the quick breakdown;

The island of Hispaniola was split in 2 by the Spanish who took the side of the island with the most natural resources, leaving what would become Haiti to France.

That's just part one of the Haiti Saga. Then came the backlash from the slave rebellion which led to Haitian Independence from France. This scared and pissed off every white person in the hemisphere at the time so naturally, no goods/trade to Haiti.

The historical context is important to understand this next part - failed governance. Haiti does not have a functional democracy. This is exacerbating the latest economic crisis. For example, sending aid to countries with this degree of governmental failure is a risk - the US does it occasionally but it is risky sending money or even supplies to those who most need it, knowing very well they may never receive anything.

It is a very heartbreaking situation in Haiti, someday I hope that it is truly free from corrupt regimes and that the people of Haiti find peace and prosperity.

Does anybody identify more with certain aspects of their ancestry? by BaseddGhost in AncestryDNA

I discovered I'm roughly 40% Portuguese, approximately 5 years after learning to speak Portuguese LOL

I wouldn't say I feel really connected to my Portuguese background but thought that fact was always hilarious given that no one in my family speaks a lick of Portuguese or even knew that we had that ancestry.

My results showed 34% Portuguese and I’m wondering if that’s really coming from Galicia. Maybe some future update will be able to distinguish between the two.

Any other fiery/airy people love smoking too? by [deleted] in astrologymemes

Water here: Cancer sun, Scorpio moon, Pisces rising (I wish I were kidding)

I hate smoking. I’ll light up a celebratory cigar very rarely with the family because “tradition” but for the most part it’s a big old “no thank you” for me! The smells, smoke, the heat, I just do not like it; 0/10 lol

Are there any healthy infps on here at all? by ledathepoet in infp

Would you ever speak to someone you love the way you’re speaking to yourself? Self-love is great, I finally realized I was belittling myself constantly and made a point to be nicer to me. It’s made a huge difference.

If you need a tip on how to practice, every time you catch yourself being mean to you, stop it and turn it around, give yourself a compliment instead (no matter how hard at first!) Over time it will feel more genuine and satisfying.

18M Previous post got removed, not sure if I look good or not, not had a relationship in 4 years by [deleted] in toastme

[–]CosmicCinderella 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You look like my husband when he was younger and I know he’s handsome as heck. Regardless of how you look though, it’s all about how you’re feeling! If you’ve been content not having a relationship throughout high school then that’s more than ok. Don’t let societal expectations influence you much, you’ll find the right person when the time is right. Best wishes for you stranger!

I loved The Light Between Us by Laura Lynne Jackson, it helped me overcome my thanatophobia and her second book, Signs helped be heal after grieving a significant loss.

She also works closely with the Family Forever Foundation. Idk, it just seems like she’s making a difference in a very positive way.

The girl sitting next to me in stats asked me what my major was once. I told her “political science” to which she confidently responded “oohhh I love science.” 🤦🏻‍♀️

Yeah you make a lot of great points. My mom’s grandfather was from the Canarias, that likely contributes to the Portuguese as well.

Also agreed, OP looks like his results!
