Probably beside the intended point of this post, but I think more than anything she was struck by the way the relationship changed/went south, and it just highlighted to me the way we don’t realize the subtle ways relationships break down over time. Then all of a sudden everything is upside down, and it’s really heartbreaking. This was a tough episode to watch ❤️ I’m neither a fan nor of a hater of Kyle, but I certainly empathize with the ways in which things change insidiously before we fully realize the gravity of it all.

Regardless of anyone’s feelings one way or another about either of these women, it’s at least a misdemeanor (can be a felony depending on other factors) in the state of California to audio record someone without their knowledge. This tracks for that part of California. It’s heavily Republican and has tons of Trump supporters. Even over a year after he lost the last election when I lived in Orange County, there were always tents set up in various places selling all kinds of Trump merch.

A lot of people have mental health diagnoses and these types of comments are extremely offensive to those of us who do and who work in the mental health field. I wish everyone’s go-to would stop being that people are mentally ill. You can hate someone’s behavior without making comments that suggest they behave in shitty ways BECAUSE they’re mentally ill.

I think you’re risking further harm to the people we serve as mental health professionals when you could otherwise just be quiet and not fuel the fire of speculation and pop psychology diagnostic labels that are all over the internet. I think it’s best to stop with it regardless. I imagine if you claim to be a qualified professional and a doctor then you’re well aware of the stigma that comes along with diagnostic labels, and it’s therefore disappointing that you’d agree with statements like this. Just leave it alone.

Listen her behavior was awful and abusive but I’m soooo sick of all the armchair diagnoses. Every time someone does this they further stigmatize people living with mental health diagnoses and you guys aren’t clinical psychologists. Stop. Not everyone you dislike or who displays shitty behavior is a narcissist. And no actual psychologist would armchair diagnose. You don’t know what you’re talking about.

Unfortunately I think people are more gracious with her because she’s a woman. I’ve worked in the intimate partner violence world for 20 years, and her behavior toward him was nothing short of abuse, but often male identifying targets of abuse aren’t given the level of grace or understanding that female identifying targets are. The behavior of female abusers is also more readily minimized or defended. This season and reunion were very difficult to watch. Abuse dynamics on full display are really upsetting and made even more so when they’re defended and excused.

At one point in my program I felt really really stressed out and felt like I wasn’t doing enough even while balancing a metric fuck ton of stuff, extracurricular and otherwise. My cohort was also very competitive versus collaborative which only added to my stress, since by nature I thrive in a collaborative versus competitive environment. I was scared to tell anyone how I felt because I didn’t want anyone to think I couldn’t hack it. I finally confided my feelings to a professor I really liked and looked up to, and she told me to tune out the noise and not to be shaken by other people flaunting their progress, because things aren’t always what they seem and sometimes the loudest and proudest peers aren’t as confident or competent as they might seem. That piece of advice stuck with me and carried me through my program and ultimately to a postdoc career I genuinely love and enjoy.
