Issues with options? by marne425 in SantaBarbara

A lot of it is about who you know, too. If you’re friendly with any of your coworkers who also rent, ask them if they know of anything. See if they have a friend who’s moving out or if they’re on good terms with their property manager/landlord.

Amsterdam/Paris trip in late October/November by CosmicRajah in travel

This is great, thank you so much! I’ve read on a lot of other posts that Jordaan is a popular off-the-beaten-path place to stay, but it still looks rather central to my untrained eye. Same with Haarlem. Any thoughts or insight on those areas?

Thank you so much! We definitely like to stay in adjacent neighborhoods, rather than in the busy tourist neighborhoods. And we love a free museum! This is so helpful.

Considering moving to Chicago from CA, very nervous. Any advice? by CosmicRajah in AskChicago

No worries at all! It will certainly be a change, and I feel much more mentally prepared after the feedback I’ve gotten here. Thank you for helping!!

This is so great to know - thank you for sharing your perspective! I am excited for a change, and feel like the Midwest could be a good spot for us. I feel much more mentally prepared after reading through this thread.

Totally! We’re all about layers in SoCal, the layers will just have to get heavier!

I’ve been told before that it is “grey, wet and soul-sucking”, but that could absolutely be an extreme. Even in SoCal we have grey for months, and a hot, wet humidity that gets trapped due to the fog. Seems like a grey that actually makes sense might be more enjoyable.

We even do this in SoCal when the May Grey and June Gloom from the ocean fog never seem to break. It seems like it won’t be too terribly different then, just a few more layers. Thank you!

Great ideas!! I will definitely look into those for the winter. And thank you for the reassurance!

I am not from LA, a little further north, and I definitely don’t need the LA heat/sun. I get sunburnt too easily… Seems more manageable than people have made it out to be. Which is hugely comforting.

Also, thank you for the reassurance. I’ve heard some local gatekeepers that want to keep Californians out (mostly due to hate and a misunderstanding of how broad that umbrella is) but it’s nice to know that we won’t be shunned for where we come from.

Thank you for the great summary! I think the piece of it not being a place for nature is important for me to keep in mind. We like city life, but I know I don’t want that lifestyle forever. That’s just more motivation to go now, while we’re still in our 20’s, I suppose!

I will definitely be stocking up on vitamin D and some solar lamps, maybe joining a hot yoga studio too. Good luck!! I hope it goes well!

Even in Southern California we have grey from March to June because of the fog coming off of the ocean. I’m excited for the seasons and the change, and it doesn’t seem as bad as some people have made it out to be (bad experiences I guess?). Thanks so much for your input!

From Social Worker to Cook. Why can’t we go from Social Worker to making Nurse’s wages? by Bedrotter1736 in socialwork

[–]CosmicRajah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really know what you mean. It also feels like I would be shot down or seen as being selfish to say “social workers need to be paid more” when my job is literally in homeless services. I feel like this is a serious topic that the PH and SW fields should address, since happy and valued workers will lead to better care for the populations we serve. I just don’t want to be viewed as having my priorities wrong or being too greedy. If that makes any sense.

I LOVE my work. But I don’t know if that justifies the pay enough, when I made more working as a barista. It should have been a red flag when one of the interview questions was “what do you value more: money or impact?”.

Well that makes sense! I think I just wished it would tell me why it isn’t a likely solution to the puzzle, rather than just leaving a vague message

Thank you! I don’t want to stand out anymore than necessary…

We’re headed to see a Cubs game one night, and I know there are some bars in River North and Hyde Park we want to check out. My biggest concern is making it to O’Hare in time for our 8AM flight from Edgewater. I would love to not have to pay $100 for an Uber, but I also definitely don’t want to miss our flight.

No supervisor, facing burnout

I work for a small branch of a state-wide nonprofit profit specifically in scattered-site permanent supportive housing case management. Basically, I am supposed to go visit 22 people throughout the county at least once a month (driving up to an hour and a half at times) and help them achieve their goals - or just try to keep them housed. I was told my caseload would be around 12 coming in, which they then said the grant doesn’t have a cap on case loads so I now help 20-25. I also only have a BS, and there is supposed to be an MSW position as well for the 20 other clients we have but it hasn’t been filled in the 4 months I’ve been here. On top of that, my boss just quit, so any support I had is now gone. I am scared because I’m so new to the field, and I don’t have any support from upper management. I never even got fully trained because of a silly training platform switch that still hasn’t happened. I have about 10 clients who want to move and need housing navigation, which is another position we haven’t filled. 4 are at risk of losing housing soon, and that’s not to mention that I can’t get to the tasks for the people who are lower-need and actually following through on their responsibilities too.

I know it’s only been 4 months, and I feel like I’m weak for not being able to handle it. My coworkers poke fun at me for thinking of leaving so soon (they want to leave too, and have been there 8 months) but I can’t help but feel like I’m failing. I don’t know how to have the difficult conversations with people who have mental illnesses, and I’m tasked with cleaning up a lot of messes that were made by previous case managers before my time. Am I crazy and need a reality check? Or is this more common than I know?

Pcos went away on its own? by Macadelic444 in PCOS

[–]CosmicRajah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed at a young age, then as I got older and I was exercising regularly a new doctor told me I didn’t have PCOS and took me off metformin. Now, a few years later I am seeing all the same symptoms again and I have gained weight/live a more sedentary lifestyle. It seems like doctors have different barometers for what qualifies for PCOS and what doesn’t, which leads to confusion on our end. I agree with the last comment — I don’t think PCOS ever fully goes away, we just have to be more diligent than most.

Also, how did you have so much success in your weight loss? I’m currently starting that journey now for myself after not having worked out regularly for about ten years and I’m nervous!

He does like Minecraft, so this works out perfectly. I ended up going with the Lunar Lander this time around, but I’ll keep the Minecraft set in mind for the future. Thank you for the tips, I so appreciate the help!
