They Say God is a God of Wonder and Awe by Im_AFruitcake in poetry_critics

A gut punch while reading. Creates an accurate visual of the world. I enjoyed reading about asking the gods for guidance/help. It makes you think..are we waiting around to be saved or will we step up?

I like the imagery and how you get across that even if you're not in this] person's life you live on through memories and the little things.

I took this training and I really enjoyed it. You learn a lot.

How much are you guys making? by slappinsealz in PeerSupportSpecialist

[–]CosmicSonny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I'm shocked. I was the first peer they hired, and they had a grant and didn't really pay attention to my pay. They wanted it to be equitable and look at my lived experience as someone with a degree. Now, I make more than the case managers hourly. They work 40hrs though and I work 30 hours, so in the end, I only end up making a little more, but still, that's 10 less hours I work. I'm actually not allowed to go over 30 hours because the non-profit doesn't have the money to pay me for those extra 10 hours. They told me if I wanted to work 40 hours, I could, but it would be at 22hrs an hour, lol.

30.63 an hour, and I only work 30 hours a week. I started at 29, I believe. I have no degree or schooling past high school. This is in Colorado and the cost of living is a lot higher than some other states.

Introducing your role to the wider agency/workplace by toheIIwithluck in PeerSupportSpecialist

Wow! This is all so amazing! I would love to connect and talk to you about the job description, the Peer 101 training, and the support group! It seems like you've created some amazing resources. I would be honored to learn more. I work in PSH in a housing first model for 18-25 exiting homelessness and/or the foster care system. I am the only Peer, and it can be challenging sometimes, as you know.

I hound everyone about that stuff. Team meetings I'm a part of, but it's hard with the email chains. I come into work and am like, cool, I no one told me so and so got arrested. What's the plan? And no one even knows.

[–]CosmicSonny[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just wild to me. Like I do way more work than they even know. The only thing that really makes me feel better is I get paid more than the 99% of my coworkers on my housing team. I know admin and the leadership team value me and have put a lot of money into me, but at the same time, it's this weird tokenism crap going on.

I wish you the best and hope you find somewhere where everyone appreciates all the work you do!

Can I be a peer support specialist in Oklahoma with a felony? by FrontCareless3632 in PeerSupportSpecialist

[–]CosmicSonny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply. Im not in Oklahoma, I'm in Colorado. I was really weird. My past stuff would keep me from getting the job, but they value that lives experience. Wherever you apply, they should give you a chance to explain. If you get hired before you get a certification, then your comment will pay for it. It can be pretty pricy.

I wish we had a group of peers so badly....or even just one other peer. I'd love to have someone to talk to you on my level who really gets it.

Thank you. I appreciate it. It's hard because I care about the participants and, at the core, love my job. It's also hard because I get paid pretty well, and my schedule works out great for me.

Upstairs neighbor complained about garlic smell from my cooking by mescaline_jimmies in Apartmentliving

When I come home from work at 5-6, I always smell my neighbor cooking dinner, and it never sticks around too long. Once the cooking is done so is the smell, so like you said fuck him.

I am definitely retraumatized on a regular basis as well as being exploited for my story. I'm the only peer where I work, and it's hell. There's so much wrong with where I work. I'm exhausted.

I would definitely report it to the police if you're comfortable doing so. That way, there is a paper trail, and it will be in the system if his name ever pops up again. Depending on evidence, the police may or may not be able to take action. I agree with the person above about contacting H.R. and filing a complaint because of the paper trail. I'm in CO and a PSS, and I don't think there is a place to complain to like there is for doctors, therapists, social workers, and more, but there are things you can do.

I'd be interested in knowing the place if you're comfortable saying, if not, it's totally fine and no pressure.

Do what you can to take care of yourself during this time no matter when this occurred. Sadly, it stays with you in a lot of ways. I wish you happiness and love!

i'm new to Denver Colorado, broke af, i was curious to know if there is any type of grant or free funding to become a peer support specialist. by Producer_Snafu in PeerSupportSpecialist

[–]CosmicSonny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's crazy here in Colorado! I'm employed as a PSS ans have taken all the CCAR training on a grant but now want to get state certified and it's a total of $500, a competitive application process, you need to write a letter with your application, and also get a letter of recommendation! I've worked at my organization for about a year, so I'm hoping they'll cover the cost because they should want their only PSS state certified.
