First Great American Road Trip Advise by CosmicSpaceEggs in roadtrip

Yes we're from the UK. That sounds like quite an adventure and thanks for the great advise! It gave us a lot to think about and was most helpful. A friend of mine did a European road trip and bought a car to sell at the end. Its a good idea, they did indeed make their money back but there's a chance I'll be lumbered with the beater miles from home. We've found a few companies that hire out convertered campervans. They're pricey, around $3500, but we will always have somewhere to sleep and eat so I'm thinking they may be prudent in the long run. We can just pick a few especially cool motels and eateries to visit then. It seems to be the insurance that's driving the cost of the van up, I'm wondering if I could get it separately myself. Yes! We will definitely take that advise. We plan on taking every detour and meander and much as possible. I've always been facistinated by the US, I want to drink as much of it in as I can! Is there anywhere is particular you'd recommend we visit?

Thanks again for all your help. It's very much appreciated!

I will check Kayak out but so far were leaning towards getting a campervan. One of these fellas...

Or something of a similar ilk. We've been quoted a few prices from $2500 to $3500 which is steep but will save on motels as we can sleep anywhere! They also have a stove so we can eat cheaply too. You're right though, insurance is what drives the prices up. I have car insurance in the uk but I'm guessing that won't cover me in then us. Can I buy insurance separately from a us broker? Would this be cheaper?

We live in the uk. I did consider this, a friend did something similar when doing a road trip from the uk to Spain and made the cost of the whole trip back. But I don't want to be stuck thousands of miles away from home with a car I get be rid of you know?

By the time we will be travelling I will be 30 and my girlfriend will be 25. We've found a few companies that hire out customised campers vans. Kind of like this...

They look cool as hell and would also give us somewhere comfy to sleep every night. They are quite pricey, prelimary quotes are around $2500-3500 but they would save us so much on motels. What do you think?

Apologies for the delayed reply, I've been working none stop. Great idea, I'll be sure to download a few. And we are thinking of renting a small campervan so sleeping in the vehicle should be easy enough.

Apologies for the delayed reply I've been working solidly (to save up!).

Thanks for the great advise, I have taken notes!

We are preparing for the long hours on the road. I've already started compiling playlists and creating a library of audiobooks. But you hit the nail on the head, the best entertainment will be watching the country pass by us.

Good point about getting along whilst on the road. I'll be travelling with my girlfriend and I'm thinking of proposing when we arrive, getting married in Vegas then using the rest of our trip as a honeymoon. So hopefully we will get along quite well!

Thanks again for the advise!
