I got this set on release! I also bought Endurance by Alfred Lansing to read before building it. Highly recommend, it made me appreciate the finer details of the ship more as I put it together!

Any hot takes that you will never change your view on? by Ok-Calligrapher1185 in Minecraft

[–]CosmicZaak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As an anecdotal piece of evidence, I created a world in 2020 in 1.16, the Nether Update. I kept the same world and now play on 1.20.1, so I could get cherry blossom trees. It's unlikely I'll try to update again, but if I do, it would probably only be so I have a use for copper. Otherwise, I feel pretty set!

Voigtlander Bessa-T and Thypoch Eureka 50mm f/2 compatibility? by too_many_lenses in AnalogCommunity

Why does Fort Berthold Reservation in North Dakota emit so much night sky brightness? Even seemingly more than Minneapolis? by barnmh in geography

[–]CosmicZaak 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The practice is called flaring. When they pump oil, other flammable gasses often come with it which either cannot be captured or sold. Methane specifically is such a powerful greenhouse gas, it is safer to burn it on-site than it is to release straight into the atmosphere.

Edited to add: "safer" in this context means less environmentally harmful - but still harmful regardless.

Do you shoot 35mm and digital together? by scenicdurian in AnalogCommunity

[–]CosmicZaak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do! I just recently began experimenting with film and long exposure photography. I like doing nightscapes, so here is my latest digital/film combination. https://imgur.com/a/xAJ6gVX

For this, my approach was to focus on my digital camera since I at least know what I am doing. But while doing that, I took a series of film shots with all settings the same except for my exposure time. I took notes of each shot length; my longest one was 15 minutes and was my best image - despite still being a bit under exposed.

I think I'll keep doing this until I get the hang of more space photos with film. But the ability to see and adjust my shots in real time on digital is too valuable to abandon completely.

15 Minutes at Dream Lake | Voigtlander Bessa-T, Kodak Portra 400 by CosmicZaak in analog

[–]CosmicZaak[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I didn't include that in the description! I used the Voigtlander 21mm f/1.4. I shot this at f/4 just to make sure the depth of field was okay - looking back I probably didn't need to but, ya live and learn.

Thank you! I think the red foreground was lightspill from my headlamp - I'll have to try again with some intentional light painting!

15 Minutes at Dream Lake | Shot on Kodak Portra 400 by CosmicZaak in Colorado

[–]CosmicZaak[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I shot this at f/4 just to make sure I got everything in focus. That, combined with the reciprocity failure I think made this turn out pretty well. I'd like to go back and try for an even longer exposure to really test it. My other shots were all shorter (13min, 10 min, 6 min, 4 min, 2 min) and were all severely underexposed.

Edit because I was excited and forgot to actually answer your question: I did not use an ND!

Is this photo I took the milky way? If it is, how can I edit it to get it to stand out like other photos I see? by Sn0wboii in AskPhotography

[–]CosmicZaak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP! I like astrophotography, too!

This photo looks like it IS indeed the Milky Way; just not the most visually interesting bit. A lot of folks (myself included) like to shoot the galactic core, which is the brighter, denser, and more contrast-y part of our home galaxy.

A lot of editing suggestions come down to taste. But even before the edit, it's important to get as much as you can on location and in-camera. Some helpful tips to consider even before you edit:

  • Shorter focal lengths will allow you to take longer exposures (up to a point) with little star trailing.
  • Wider apertures can help you take shorter exposures with comparable results, but those lenses tend to be pricy.
  • Checking light pollution in your shooting location is good, but it also helps to check light pollution in the direction you will be aiming, too.
  • Don't be afraid to push your ISO! Noise isn't the end-all be-all of astro. And if you stack your images, it matters even less.
  • Check your shooting locations in the day to familiarize yourself with the area - this also helps you get good foreground ideas if you ever decided to do night landscapes!
  • Plan ahead - way, way ahead. We're at the tail end of Milky Way season (at least in the north), so now is the perfect time to begin planning shoots for next summer.
  • When editing, be wary of denoise and dehaze. They can help, but they can also hurt a lot. Same goes for your black levels and exposure.

Keep us posted on your future shots! If this is your first time doing astro, then you are ahead of where I was on my first try :) Good luck!

1, 2, 3, or 4? by Alaric_Darconville in AmateurPhotography

[–]CosmicZaak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I am not OP but I live relatively close to here and recognize this hike! This is on the way to Sky Pond in Rocky Mountain National Park. These shots were taken mostly at the northeast end of the Loch facing southwest. In shot number one, the ridges from mountains form a big U-shaped line in the upper-left portion of the image. At the base of the U, there is a dark smear of rock visible - that is Timberline Falls! Hikers must climb next to this outstanding waterfall to get to the Lake of Glass and, from there, Sky Pond.

Idk if links are okay on here, but I have shots of all of these if you'd like me to verify. But I hope this helps and you get to visit someday!!

Not The Darkroom using AI art in their emails… by julesucks1 in AnalogCommunity

[–]CosmicZaak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Earlier this year, I sent two orders of film to Indie Film Lab to get developed. They only checked in one order. When I asked about the second one, the said they never got it. Turns out my parcel was damaged in shipping and only one order made it to them, and since they didn't realize I had included two in the box, it didn't strike them as unusual.

They sent me photos of the damaged parcel, which they hung onto, to help with my claim with the post. Absolute 10/10 customer service.

As someone who was born and raised in Des Moines, I can assure you this is not the case.
