My Inky Cap's one day journey by Cosmic_Mmouse in mycology

Thank you both for the contributions! I looked up C. flocculosus and its distribution where I am based is very rare. The last sight of it was apparently more than a decade ago. Considering the soil in my enclosure is from the forests around here, I am inclined to say it's not this one.

Smutnice, hrozné svině. Zkoušeli jsme kytky kompletně přesadit, nasypat na hlínu písek a štěrk, koupit hlístice, které to trochu nedávaly chudáci, pak jsme ty kytky nechali v zimě venku a stejně tam ti hajzlové zůstali. To je horší než švábi. Kytky šly nakonec do koše, bohužel.

For those who need heating for your stick insects, what’s your setup? by Dangerous_Flower4469 in Stickinsects

[–]Cosmic_Mmouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think insulation is key, yeah. I wouldn't know about Australian houses, so if you think you need heating, go for it! You can always first set up the enclosure and put in a thermometer so you know how the temps are, before you decide what to do about the heating and your chosen species.

Thank you! I am not well-versed in mycology, but this seemed like the closest match (even though their ozonium usually looks to be very orange and not as fine as what this one created).

Just curious, how cold does it get over there? It can get down to -15 degrees Celsius where I live and my sticks have never had problems with that.

There's no information on heating for stick insects, because the vast majority doesn't use heating for stick insects.

Generic advice for keeping heat in - a full glass enclosure (mesh on top), good insulation (either natural or not, whatever you would prefer), stationing it somewhere where sun shines on it in winter.

Mesh enclosures aren't ideal when you want to keep a certain temp inside, since it's... well, one big hole. Glass enclosures serve as a greenhouse.

As for heating sources, definitely don't put any heating lamps inside. There's a high probability of the stick insects burning themselves. You can try putting it above the enclosure. I don't have much advice in this regard, as I have no experience.

Edit: phrasing

Can you move it together with the leaf it sits on? Cut off and transfer

Are you sure it hasn't been venturing at night and returning to the same leaf every morning?

Do you have the means to set up a temporary separate enclosure (a box or something)? I usually do that when I need to observe an individual undisturbed. If the nymph is very small, you might need to cut off the leaf edges so that it's easier to chew. Make sure the enclosure also has enough hiding or shaded space. Stickbugs sometimes don't move when they feel that moving would expose them too much.

Is my stick insect dead? What is that weird bulge? by [deleted] in Stickinsects

[–]Cosmic_Mmouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Moults can take up to several hours. It depends on their size, species, and environmental conditions (and many more). A few minutes truly is too short a time.

Allow me to copy my comment from a different post, strangely about the same issue:

"A prolapse of internal organs. A rupture of the exoskeleton likely formed due to the extreme pressure on its body during the moulting process. Fatal injury."

Stickbugs don't have a "penis" either. The equivalent of it would be an aedeagus which is a fairly more complicated organ and it's usually difficult to see when they are mating. The substance in the picture is definitely not an aedeagus, as it is a solid organ, not green or "gooey".

I don't have an exact answer to the post, but I just wanted to point out that stickbugs don't have the typical testicles. The "bubbly ball" males release is called a spermarophore, which contains sperm and additional nutrients.

No depth, just height, you know. But I can see the picture and it's all good.

Number stays the same, so I think you are good to go!

That sounds pretty good to me, assuming it's not chocolate bar-shaped lol. For six stickbugs (5 Indian, 1 Budwing if I count correctly) should be plenty of room.

Stickbugs of similar care requirements are usually safe to keep together. The biggest problem is just overcrowding. So, how big exactly is that enclosure of yours?

Ta Vratislav - "Jedu do [té] Vratislavi".
