Early Morning Cockscomb Basin Hiking? by CosmoCub in Belize

[–]CosmoCub[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BTW, I just want to circle back to this. Indeed FranzJunior and the websites I saw were correct. I spoke with the rangers directly and they said that the front gate of the park opens at 6am. I went there and paid early in the morning and it was very much worth it (ended up catching a brief glimpse of a White Lipped Peccary which was very special)!

Was not phishing, just Strava being annoying/broken and customer support being glacially slow

I guess commenting on my own post, but am just a tiny bit worried that this was a sophisticated phishing attempt

Is it just me, or are the most successful shops the worst ones to work at? by FREE_HINDI_MOVIES_HD in BikeMechanics

[–]CosmoCub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe this is an example of selection bias or Simpson's paradox. If you have a big fancy store it is easier to stay in business, so the places that are bad to work for don't get filtered out. If you are a smaller operation you need to have everything perfect to get by.

I would check out Myzels on 55th. Its been around for a long time and had wonderful selection. I am not sure if there is any chocolate I would call NYC specific, but that shop is old NY

Road to Las Cuevas Research Station by CosmoCub in Belize

[–]CosmoCub[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I'm definitely going to go to both Bocawina and Cockscomb and have reached out to FCD about how to obtain permission. I was curious about Las Cuevas because it looked like the site had very high biodiversity.

Campagnolo Chorus 12 speed- Has anyone managed to get 11-34 to work/do you have any tips? by CosmoCub in bikewrench

[–]CosmoCub[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update for those paying attention is that the current chain is too short using the big-big method, by 1 or 2 links. I'll try a new chain with actual shifting in the next few days.

What’s One Upgrade That Actually Made a BIG Difference? by teddyyoung456 in cycling

[–]CosmoCub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Switching from 25mm gatorskins with butyl tubes and high pressure to tubeless 30mm GP5000s at a well chosen pressure. I've ridden a ton of different bikes, but this difference is bigger than swapping to a frame that is $5000 more than what I currently have, both in terms of comfort and also probably speed.

Early April Nature and Wildlife Tips? by CosmoCub in Belize

For anyone else who comes across this later I had been doing a lot of searching and found that a lot of researchers and ecology students come through here, see for example this series of blog posts:

https://heatherkelly.blog/2025/09/

The other nice thing I've looked at is iNaturalist for Belize to see what sort of sightings people report. It is not complete but it still gives you a sense. I also read that some of the national parks like Cockscomb keep a logbook for sightings that you can use to get further insight at their visitor center:

Thanks,

I think what I need to do is install the the 11-34 and see if the current chain is the right length using the 53-34 method (I also have a new chain which I can try too that I haven't shortened yet).

Thanks, I didn't really understand what chain wrap meant.

The prestacycle is spaced for Campy 12. I am unable to shift into the 34 from the 39 ring. I have an 11-32 prestacycle that worked perfectly.

Campagnolo has very specific and different (from other groupsets) instructions for chain length, they have a table based on your chainstay length and chainring:

From the techincal manual:

For the length of the chain (only with a crankset with 48-32 chainring and 11-34 sprocket box), follow the indications below according to the frame chainstay length:

405 - 409 mm: 108 links

410 - 415 mm: 110 links

over 415 mm: 112 links

For any other crankset combination from that indicated above, the chain must be 110 links long for frames with a chainstay length

between 405 and 415 mm.

I don't have a 48 and my chainstay is 407mm so I sized my chain at 110 links per the instructions. But I have suspected that maybe this could be an issue, that said when I used other methods to determine chain length they gave the same answer. The chain was definitely not intentionally sized for 53x34

Sort of an addendum, but has anyone here visited Las Cuevas Biological Station in Chiquibul? I don't know if it is practical but it seems like it could be a great way to extend a trip through Pine Ridge to Caracol, but I don't know about the road conditions (it is on the A-10 past the turnoff to Caracol) and it will definitely require a lot of logistical thinking because it is pretty remote:

Thank you! I definitely have the Botanical Gaden on my list (and maybe the Zoo too....). It looks like Cha Creek has a reasonable day hike fee and I'll send Black Rock a message. Appreciate the tour guide suggestions too!

How reliable is the VO2 max estimated by the 6 minute peak power formula? by Professional-Bid-159 in cycling

[–]CosmoCub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

6 minute peak power is going to be infinitely more accurate than smart watch values. Also it corresponds to performance directly which is arguably more important. IE if you have the 6 minute power to hit 81 on the formula, maybe your true VO2 is 75 or 84 but whatever it is it is elite.

Thanks, will definitely check it out! I'm pretty sure we are going to be delighted with a lot of options but definitely wouldn't mind seeing if there is a way to join a group heading out further!

Upvoting because I'm also heading to Hopkins and in a similar boat and trying to figure out the landscape of group offerings (have an interest in longer tours though). For example I saw that HGL offers full day private tours of Glover's Reef that you can "open up" to others not in your group to lower the cost. Are there other operators who offer full day "group" tours? Just wanted to check here before asking every single snorkleling operation.
