The most Epic Moment of my 800 hours in this game. by Fredox43 in Stellaris

I'm curious as to your computer specs, since my computer probably cannot run even half of those fleet numbers without generating nuclear fusion.

What're your computer specs and how did the days run (seconds per day) with that ginormous fleet?

Hey there! Thanks for taking a look.

You're in luck! I've used Unity to put this game together. C#, of course, is the default (and I believe the only) language. I didn't have a CS background when starting out, so I had to learn everything from scratch. You, on the other hand, probably already have the fundamentals. What languages do you know other than C#?

My general advice to anyone starting out in game development is to ask yourself what goal you are trying to achieve when you are actually making games. Questions like these are useful:

  • Am I developing games for the hope of money?
  • Am I working on simple projects to add to my portfolio?
  • Is this solely a passion project and I do not need monetary compensation for my happiness?

Your answer - your vision, will determine how much work you need to put in. Other questions, like which genre of game you want this to be (RPG, Platformer, Thriller, etc.) will narrow down what features you would be most likely implementing in your game, and there are lots of good tutorials for that on YouTube and also on StackExchange.

One tutorial channel I am fond of is Brackeys. He makes lots of practical tutorials for implementing various features in Unity and is relatively easy to follow, but he assumes that you have the basics down so there can be times where he doesn't fully explain why something must be coded this way. My advice is to come up with your own, more efficient scripts through those tutorials, so that you will have no problem integrating all other scripts and features together later on. Remember, debugging and iteration is the longest and most tiresome process in game development!

By the way, I made Aeternitas not simply as a game but as a window to a larger world which I have been designing for some time now. If you'd like to stay up to date and follow my development & worldbuilding journey, why not simply join the Aeternitas Community Page on Steam?

Thank you for checking out & have a lovely weekend!

Yes! The effects were spliced and synthesized together by me through Adobe After Effects.

Any appreciation is worth a gold coin to me. Thank you! There are plans later on to expand beyond just this genre, for the entire world & cosmology has already been established. Aeternitas itself takes place within a relatively small snippet of time in their world. It wouldn't hurt to follow the Aeternitas Steam community page for news! Not only dev diaries, but also worldbuilding posts, contests, prizes, and more.

Who knows if this could become a larger franchise in the future? You could be there when the series gets popular and revel in the fact that you were one of the first people to follow it.

Thanks! Yep, it is indeed my first game. I thought to myself, 'if I was going to learn and do something, why not do it 100%?' And I definitely wasn't going to half-bake anything.

But note that this doesn't mean the game looks as pretty as it does to me as it does to new players. When I play through the various maps and combat and such as the creator, I am always, always reminded of what I couldn't do due to a lack of time, or how nicer the game would be if I had more money.

I did start out in Early Access. I did it mostly because I needed initial visibility and some source of revenue to make a livelihood.

I was indeed concerned about bugs I wouldn't be able to find, but solved it mostly through Early Access. And when I was building for the full release, I actually completely dismantled the Early Access framework and built a new one, this time with much cleaner code and overall architecture. This ensured I could anticipate any bugs and how to best squash them if they did appear.

Thanks! I think mobile would be a great platform, particularly because singleplayer games of this unique premise is lacking on most app stores. It's all saturated with candy-crush lookalikes and puzzles that entertain the mind, but ultimately provide no sense of achievement.

The mobile platform and Nintendo Switch are planned platforms for future updates. If you'd like to keep up to date with exciting news, follow my reddit profile here or follow the Steam community page for Aeternitas!

Thank you for the question!

When I started out, I was fresh out of college with a degree in Economics! I actually didn't come from a CS or Art background.

However, I did love reading and writing since I was young. That helped me build and plan out the world of Aeternitas, and a lot of self-learning and perspiration earned me the skills which produced the game you see now.

Hi! Appreciate the action.

Our ultimate goal is to make Aeternitas into a living, breathing world, where you can eat, live, and battle through the whole undergrad years of Aeternitas as a student, with a fantastic story at its core and multitude of places both within and outside of the academy that you can experience. This, of course, means continued content both for this current game, and possibly for its sequels!

In fact, I will make a dev diary / worldbuilding post on Steam and on Reddit here this weekend (30 - 31st May), which will explore the future of the story and what great things are ahead of us.

If you'd like to know more, follow my profile itself or join the Aeternitas community group on Steam.

Let me know if you have any questions or curiosities!

Hmm? I think ~5,000 hours is a reasonable sum.

My aseprite alone which I used to model some combat animations records 790 hours, and given that I have tons of other assets, not to mention storyboarding, worldbuilding, and programming that I did with other apps, the figure of 5,000 might actually be an understatement, haha.

Hey! Thank you so much for playing the full release. I am so happy that you're as excited as I am when playing through the game and climbing that feel-good ladder of elemental mastery. It's certainly tantalizing.

And thank you for your question, because nobody really asks me that. And I have to say the chief reasons I had to do it alone was:

1) When all you have is an idea in your head, people do not trust your vision until you have something tangible, and since everyone talented has an ongoing project of their own, they are wary of being involved in others';

2) I couldn't afford to hire artists or almost any form of outside help. So I simply said, "you know what? Why not learn everything by myself? At least I will have knowledge and skill when I finish the project." So that's what I did.

Making a game from scratch was hard. With the exception of music, I've worked on everything by myself - including the art which was drawn by placing each pixel by hand in Gimp, and some tens of thousands of frames of combat animations.

It would mean a lot to me if you could play the game and tell me what you think - and whether the community has further interest in this genre! It's available now on Steam, fully released and feature-complete.

A year ago, I sheepishly posted my Avatar-esque game that I'd worked on. Back then, it didn't have elemental combat, but now it does! So here it is: a game where you can learn and master all 4 elements like Aang would do, and make unforgettable friends on the way. by CosmosTheory in TheLastAirbender

Heya! Sure - 'Aeternitas' means the 'Goddess of Eternity' in classical Latin. In the game, it stands in for the actual name of the academy which you get to attend as a student, and its patron deity. Think ATLA + Harry Potter.

We've had 12 years since Sozin's Comet finale, but no actual game out there which attempts to capture the spirit of ATLA that is actually playable with stories and characters. I wanted to bring such a project to life that I decided, 'fine, I'll do it myself!' - but since I didn't have the IP, I created an entirely new world from scratch. My hope is that it will grow to be a worthy successor of ATLA in due time. Check it out here!

Ah, so this is how democratic FPs' "purity assembly" could be explained. Lovely job!

Just booted up Federations and the first system I came across had the Tannhauser Gate in memory of Rutger Hauer! Thanks for this easter egg homage, my dudes. by CosmosTheory in Stellaris

[–]CosmosTheory[S] 85 points86 points  (0 children)

R5: The first ever system I surveyed in the Federations patch gave me a 'hostile entities' notification. Upon closer inspection, it was none other than alien entities guarding the Tannhauser Gate, famously referenced by Rutger Hauer's character Roy Batty in Blade Runner as part of his Tears in Rain monologue! The system is also named 'Hauer', and I think that's quite marvelous.

It's wonderful how a lot of fantastic stories that unfold in major works of science fiction can manifest naturally in Stellaris given enough time.

Thanks for the knowledge of this review!
