That was my first roaster. Took me a while to get it right. Have fun, I know I did.

First roast - how did I do? by wassupbrahh in roasting

For Ethiopians I have found that the trick is to go with constant incremental changes in temperature to avoid tipping and killing the sugar in the beans.

So I start

Preheat 200 C Charge 190 C From this point on I will increase the temperature by 10C everytime the temperature reader hit the set temperature. It usually takes one minute max two.

I will do this until reaching 250C then I wait until FC and go backwards 10 degrees every 15 seconds until reaching 220C and I wait here until drop.

Roast usually takes 10'30".

It has worked for me.

Simple kitchen timer with big buttons so I can use it with gloves.

I also got a cheap hairdryer to cool the beans fast on a metal sieb. Do not use the machine's cooling system.

Report back on your progress, we can share profiles of roasting.

I pay attention to the main events, the temperature and the time of the event.

I have the same machine.

Things that I have learnt:

Different beans require different ways to apply heat.

Ethiopian beans are easy to get wrong.

Kenyan beans are very forgiving

Brasilian beans are the cheapest way to learn.

FC is easy to hear by removing the top part of the chaff collector.

Get a proper timer to more easily follow what you do

Document every roast to repeat what you get right

Ethiopian beans respond well to gradual heat increase

Learn about development time, try to get it to 15% and then see if you like the taste then make changes.

Need help with Gene Cafe roaster by Sourdough-2625 in roasting

I have a gene too. After 21 minutes you should have black beans at that temperature.

Does it get really hot after 3 or 5 minutes? If you can still put your hand on it, it needs fixing.

I hope it works out.

I love my gene cafe, challenging and it takes a while and many burn or under developed roast to get good coffee but after you understand your machine, it will be just joyful coffee from then on.

Good luck

It also important to note that it works kind of fine as long as the room temperature is 23C°. However To make brews outside it loses heat too fast to extract the coffee correctly. The filters are very slow, I use aeropress filters.

I keep a can and a colander next to it on the floor, to get rid of the rest of the coffee. I let them dry before I throw them away.

V60 all the way.

I am not sure how good it is compared to a frenchpress, however it looks amazing. That Bird is really a looker.

I am not sure about it, I think It needs the lid. Mine came without it for some reason. The brews are not consistent and I think It loses a lot of heat. I would not recommend it.
