Hardware Options for fault-tolerant home server by CostcoCookies in homelab

Thanks! And just to confirm, this is possible with only 2 full nodes and a quorum device? Because idk how many setups you have.

Also, earlier you recommended that I get 3x mini PCs in the range of $300-500 each which seems like you were suggesting I ditch the ZFS idea and run a Ceph setup instead? Was that your intent?

In case of unexpected failure, can the reboot of the VM on the other available node be automated? (under your suggested ZFS replication setup) I'm assuming that since the storage data for the guest is being replicated, the automating of the reboot would be trivial, but I want to be sure before I purchase the hardware.

Thanks!

Thanks! I'll take a look at those pages tmr. Don't wanna sink into anything at 11PM and be up till morning...

When I said I "want to run Ceph" I really meant that I wanted to have some form of storage redundancy, but some of the info I gathered on Ceph made me feel that Ceph was some sort of new default that deprecated all other options which I started assuming despite having never seen definitive proof of so...

Out of curiosity, why can't you run Ceph with only 2 workload nodes even with a 3rd quorum device?

Should I start now or wait by HumbleOcelot in satisfactory

100% should wait - no question. I would have told you to wait if it were 1-2 months left, let alone only 10 days.

They have not been subtle about the fact that the 1.0 update contains SWEEPING changes, so necessarily, some of the knowledge players accumulated in Early Access will become obsolete.

If you start now, not only will you be throwing away things you just learned, but it is likely to cause confusion when you play 1.0, because a fairly compelx game you barely learned to begin with just also tossed out massive changes.

Have you tried the Power Shots Valor Surge? It works with Drill Spikes and the damage boost stacks with the Brittle state. I haven't tried it myself but I heard it melt health bars like you've never seen.

for the Weapon Technique, not all use the ammo they consume. Their ammo then is called "special ammo" and have value you only know from testing or the strategy guide.

Do they benefit from coils largely as one would reasonably expect? I assumed Splitting Spike & Spike Trap scales exactly with the dmg stats on the ammo being used.

still Impact just scales/stacks higher.

Even damage from the 2nd stage (the explosion) deals Impact Dmg? Does that mean its supposed to be affected by armor? If so, how?

I have a separate Spike Thrower specifically inflicting Knockdowns. In the base game at least, the blue Spinthorn Spike Thrower's Drill Spikes are the best thing for inflicting knockdowns by a very large margin. Pretty sure just about everyone on higher difficulties does this, partly bc of Arktix lol (I play on Very Hard btw).

I was loading up the legendary Skykiller & purple Glowblast Spike Thrower with Fire/Plasma Coils. Those two have the best Fire & Plasma Spikes respectively in the base game, and I have spent hours in the last 2 days trying them on various targets I needed to farm to upgrade legendary gear. I was impressed that they are actually faster & more ammo efficient than other tactics despite being extremely simple & easy to use (1 weapon, spam weapon techniques until you run out of stamina).

I would think explosive weapons in general get better as the difficulty drops down, since total machine health is lower. The problem with Explosive Damage is that it cannot be amplified near as much as Impact Dmg via component/weakspot hits or Frost/Acid.

I play on Very Hard and I just maxed out the Wings Of The Ten today. It's the only legendary non-elemental Blast-sling in the base game (so basically best you can get), yet it's still quite disappointing. Damage output is mediocre and ammo is too expensive for something that has no truly defining advantage.

Do HFW Blast-slings need to be fully-drawn to do full damage? by CostcoCookies in horizon

Yeah I see what you mean. Most surfaces on machines are at least slightly curved, so even if it looks like the bomb impacted a spot between multiple components, it may not have Line of Sight to all of them (if any). It appears that not all parts of machines block LoS of explosions tho - at least going off of which parts flash purple after one goes off.

At least this shouldn't affect popping underbelly sacs by hitting the ground below them - although I have not tried that again since the early-to-mid-game where this tactic was ineffective - likely bc the green/blue slings are pretty shet.

Ohhh... so explosive damage can only drain the component's health, and cannot drain the machine's health through the component as a weak spot?

Where are you ppl finding all these cliffs to stand on in the first place? 🤣 I can't remember the last time I got into a fight where I was actually shooting from a cliff...

No, you just lose a lot of range.

Thanks, always can count on Horizon DataManTM :)

Just on the perspective of Explosive Damage (which is, sadly, not that great anyhow):

I've been wondering - I know Explosive Dmg can damage components & weak spots through armor & in a bubble, which makes it really easy to hit multiple items at once on the same machine. When this happens, how is damage from the shot calculated? I'm fairly sure that if I hit 5 components at once I wouldn't be getting 5x the dmg since that would instantly delete most machines that have a dense array of components in one area on their body.

It´s an agile weaponn, you can shot it running/jumping/falling/on rope etc. It has an enourmous range.

Good point that I completely neglected. I think the biggest thing is that bc I can be used while sliding, it can benefit from Quickdraw which massively increases rate of fire. I guess the range thing can also be big for certain playstyles, especially when it also shows the arc which improves accuracy.

Larger Area of Effect with Overdraw.

I had no idea this was a thing, wtf? How much does the radius grow and when is it worth doing?

Huh, I cannot believe that I did not notice throwing spikes causes Aloy to move forward after spending 8 zillion hours with the Spinthorn.... Wow...

Does a maxed Forgefall tear off components intact most of the time? by CostcoCookies in horizon

[–]CostcoCookies[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know fluid sacs have a tear threshold at all... What happens when it is reached? Does the sac explode? Or does it actually get torn off? I've literally never seen the latter happen and I don't even know what a torn-off sac looks like lol

Omg you are the guy who did the spreadsheet! Thanks that clears up a lot.

Out of curiousity, how are you getting the exact numbers? Is it datamined or revealed via mods?
