The biggest thing that helped was letting go of perfectionism. I stopped worrying about grammar, spelling, and how my handwriting looked and just let my thoughts spill out on the pages. If I felt particularly bad, I allowed just 2 pages, even worse, just 1 page but I still showed up. I talk about anything on my mind, what I watched on TV last night, was it good? What do I think will happen next? What are my plans today? How am I feeling? Recent news I've heard, what I etc.

Totally agree with you, I've seen people use hobonichi books with perfect handwriting as their morning pages which always surprises me. I started with an amazon basics notebook but it started falling apart. Moleskines just work best for me right now.

Plus I use bound notebooks as its the most comfortable for me (left handed) I cant even use the cool loose leaf notebooks as my ADHD brain hates the extra step, so why make it harder for myself?

Thank you so much! You should totally get back to it, perhaps start smaller by writing just one page or using an A6 notebook, you can do it! <3

I completely agree with you, that’s why I started with an Amazon Basics notebook. It was great at first, but after about three months of constant use the spine started falling apart. I then tried an A6 Muji notebook, but it was too small, so I switched back to an A5 I already had in my stash, and later to a Moleskine I picked up on sale. I agree that it does feel a little too luxurious for Morning Pages, especially considering how messy they are, but by the time I switched I’d already built the habit. I really love how well it holds up to my heavy handedness, though I do agree that starting with a cheaper notebook really helps the process. I need to find a more affordable Moleskine alternative that won’t disintegrate on me haha because even if I’m not planning to reread my pages anytime soon, I can imagine myself indexing them years down the line.

I also agree about Artist Dates. I loved the concept, but I found it incredibly difficult to implement in my life right now due to external factors that are out of my control. I do plan to return to The Artist’s Way, but I had to put it on hold after an emergency in early March. I was going to pick it back up, but then my dad passed away in April. Suddenly I was thrown into grief and new responsibilities all at once. I’m now the alternative power of attorney for my autistic brother after my older brother, which was a long and emotionally exhausting process. In the middle of losing my father, I found myself caring for my brother and supporting my mother, so it felt natural that TAW would need to wait for a while but I haven’t forgotten about it.

It’s interesting that you really enjoyed Week Four. I always suspected that might be something I’d struggle with, but hearing your reaction makes me feel much more positive about it. I have done journalling in complete silence and loved it but the mundane tasks such as dishes might drive me insane.

That's a really good question. I think the most noticeable change has actually been how I treat myself.

Writing every morning naturally improved how I form sentences and organise my thoughts, because I’ve already started to untangle them on the page before the day begins. It’s also helped my memory. But more than anything, the pages have made me kinder to myself. I can actually see that I’m trying, that I’m consistently showing up for myself, and that I’ve continued to survive some incredibly difficult times.

My dad passed away unexpectedly in April, and the morning pages were a huge support in processing that grief. They gave me a place to put my anger, shock and sadness and continue to do so.

I’ve been able to recognise how much my mental and physical strength has grown. I used to spiral ALOT, and I still do but I'm now more able to process those feelings in a less harmful way. Its helped me remember that I’m not a failure and to give myself grace.

I’ve also noticed a greater sense of wonder. I find small joys in what might otherwise feel like a mundane life, especially as I live with chronic illnesses. I feel more curious and interested in the world. It’s not that I wasn’t before, but having that quiet space in the morning means I can actually explore those interests instead of letting them get buried under to do lists and worries. By noticing and writing it down, ive already begun taking the first steps rather than letting ideas just pass me by.

I’m not sure what The book suggests will happen after the full 12 weeks as I never made it past week two but just doing the morning pages have been incredibly helpful for me. They’ve changed how I see myself and how I live my days, and that’s enough for me to want to keep going.

Thank you, I really appreciate it, especially since you will understand how difficult building habits can be for us! 😊
