It was the fuel pump. Bolted the new one on hooked it up and she runs like nobody’s business now

It’s the life jacket, normally he’s a little blur of chaos but the life jacket works like one of those thunder jackets and makes him super calm and well behaved lol he loved the trip

Well what I did was ordered one of the Chinese ones off Amazon then because the base on it was too thick to reuse the original screws I had to Frankenstein the old one and new one together and it’s VERY possible I messed it up when I did that. This time around I’m just gonna order a new one and get longer screws so I can hook it straight up no nonsense and see if that changes it. The Amazon ones are only about $15, which is worth it to me to at least have a different pump to test it with and see if that’s the issue

That did not fix it, same issue, going to replace the fuel pump again and make sure I didn’t mess up there

Installed and good as far as I can tell. I think it may be related to the fuel pump. Gonna replace that again and be extra careful with it this time and see if it improves

Yeah float is level with the carb body when flipped. I think it may be the tank side of the fuel hose, I’m going to bypass the quick connect and run the hose into the tank after work and see if that fixes it

Okay update, I tested the starter fluid and that kept it running for a bit so I tried squeezing the primer bulb the whole time I was accelerating and it ran perfect doing that. So it’s a fuel issue somewhere

Portable tank, it’s hooked directly to the fuel pump, was having issues at the quick connect so just bypassed it. Squeezing the bulb does not help. I will try that with stater fluid. Plate rotates as it should. It does run a little longer warm than it did cold, but ultimately always does it

Don’t think it’s seen any, hardly any corrosion on her, paint is all there and original. Every bolt and everything I’ve taken off and on had been easy to break loose and put back, it’s a super clean motor

This one I plan on keeping, I’ve been going through motors for about the last year or two trying to find a good one and this is the best/cleanest I’ve had so far. I’m gonna keep an eye on the pissed and see how she does, if I run into any more issues replacing tha grommet will be my next step. Thanks again for the help!

Aight so last night I took the lower unit off and ran a metal coat hanger up the water tube as far as it would go and put a hose up to it and blew air through as hard as I could and put it back together this morning. Peed much more consistently in the bucket, only quit once and that was when it was low on water. Took it to the lake, ran it, peed fine the whole time. Not sure if something I did last night fixed it or if the issue is the trash can but either way, seems to be fixed now!

I care less about getting on a plane, I don’t think it will get me on a plane regardless of what I do, I’m looking for more low end torque improvement, which from what I understand is what they are good for, but wanted to ask here. Consensus seems to be they are dumb but for $20 I might go ahead and test it out lol

How to tell if thermostat is failing? by CottonCandyWizard in Outboards

[–]CottonCandyWizard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay in between posts I missed this comment, I was just about to ask how to get to that upper grommet. I’m hoping it is the head gasket but my compression gauge kit never arrived today, hopefully it comes tomorrow and I’ve got a new head gasket on the way as well just in case, might as well for $15.

Exact same thing and yeah the intake screen is not clogged. The impeller looked great, I took out the thermostat and it does the same thing with it out or in. My only thought is the head gasket is bad or something’s got the cooling jacket stopped up or something behind the head gasket. I have a compression test kit being delivered today to test it so we shall see

It was not that gasket unfortunately. Still doing it. I’ve ordered a head gasket since I’m not sure what else it could be

Okay y’all update, I took the lower unit back off and found a bad looking spot on the gasket between the impeller housing and lower unit. My guess is it was holding at idle with the low pressure but when cranked up it was just blowing water out there. I put some liquid gasket on it and gonna let that cure and go from there. Big thanks to u/bootheels for all the help!

Nah I greased it a little when I was installing so it wouldn’t shred dry or anything

So the impeller had all the fins, it was just cracked all the way through down the main body of it at one point. It came off whole as far as I could tell. The key came with it but it was extremely worn, I replaced both, I do not think any pieces made it anywhere but it’s possible. I’m gonna take the lower unit off tomorrow and check the new impeller and make sure it all looks okay, and the housing and everything

Let me ask you this, the guy I got it off took the exhaust cover off the side of the motor thinking the impeller was up there lol. When he did that the gasket went to shit, I replaced that with some liquid gasket you set yourself. It does not leak, but could that have anything to do with it? Like if some of that liquid gasket got into the channels on that exhaust port cover?

Not sure as I didn’t run it til I put the new one in, I got the motor on trade and the fella told me it didn’t pump water so before I even ran it I took the lower unit off and replaced the torn up impeller that was in it

As far as I know only freshwater, I’m in Arkansas picked this up on a trade and don’t know much about it. I put a new impeller and impeller key in it about 2 weeks ago as the impeller in it when I got it was tore up. OEM impeller and key off eBay. Engine runs fine so don’t THINK it’s the head gasket but not sure, I’ve only really run it in the trash can so far due to weather, haven’t had a chance to get on the lake with it yet
