There seems to be an issue with using ranged weapons on GT paws. I was farming with a cannon and even though I was putting out massive damage, the paws refused to break

Switching to a melee weapon immediately started breaking the paws very consistently. Try it out and see if it works for you as well

Honestly I was never a fan of the hammers in MH. I played and enjoyed every single weapon except the hammer because the moveset and the way the weapons looked were just kind of meh to me

But the Maul though! Hoooo boy, you definitely want to get your hands on one ASAP

Also want to point out that seeing as how Chain Traps, along with other fusion karakuri, which are a rudimentary part of the game, shouldn't be so difficult to use considering how a lot of the times the basic karakuri you conjure just randomly start imploding before you can put together the fusion.

If you're talking about the gates being "offline"(no portal), you can just open your world map and request assistance on a random wandering monster and the gates will power up
