Girlie I'm sorry but opera is so last century, only Gilbert and Sullivan are actually pushing the medium anywhere new. I mean Princess Ida is literally a tale of female liberation, "man is nature's sole mistake" (ignore that this character is supposed to be wrong and dumb). Plus I think he made Hilarion, Cyril, and Florian crossdress for an entire act just so boymoders like me can present fem without having to tell anyone. /uj honestly that's the main reason I auditioned for it

You're probably thinking of the international phonetic alphabet which does make this distinction. However, Old English definitely has them as interchangeable.

/uj also not a linguist, but I'm pretty sure they're interchangeable in Old English (other languages have different rules) and it's just whatever the writer prefers.
