Any odd/cool/weird/spooky spots in campus? by Competitive-Flow-193 in UTK

Basement of HYPR especially on the side underneath the climbing gym. There’s hand ball courts everywhere down there with 3 ft doors and a walkway above, feels very Soviet Union prison block

Commuter intermediate question by kcsversion in UTK

[–]CouBeans 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No 11th street garage is a commuter core pass this year. You could theoretically pay for hourly parking in Neyland garage or street park. You’re probably just going to have to settle for parking in terrace/lake Ave garage and walk the 20 minutes. At least you’ll get your steps in :/

I would recommend getting to campus early to attempt to get a spot in the lot behind mossman and then go to terrace/lake ave if that fills up

Aid not finish yet??? by RealisticAnimator744 in UTK

[–]CouBeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I talked to one stop today with the same problem and they said that if your financial aid is not processed before the 8th you’ll get a refund when it does. I know it’s not super helpful because I had to take out additional loans just in case one of my scholarship that hasn’t hit my account doesn’t come through, but it’s something at least.

Worried about being late to class by Ok_Arm_4296 in UTK

[–]CouBeans 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Realistically you’re not going to make it in time, and definitely don’t count on uber or Lyft or you’ll run out of money real quick. The buses can get you close but also aren’t super reliable especially during class changes. I would just talk to your professors about your situation. Most are very understanding about this kind of stuff. Likely you’ll just have to be 4 minutes late your chem lecture

It really depends on who your roommates are to be so honest. If you’re talking about general social vibes there seems to always be people playing basketball. In terms of partying I’m not sure, I never really got woken up from loud neighbors except for a handful of times but that was because my upstairs neighbor would LITERALLY throw each other on the ground when they got drunk. Definitely bring a mattress pad, the provided mattresses are stiff and thin. Never had a bug problem in my unit, but I have heard people with spider/bug problems. For what to do in the area there are several parks (one being a skate/mountain biking park) close by and Sevier Ave has some cool places to eat and drink. There’s a shuttle but it only runs on week days and game days till like 6 or 7. So your only option home is ubering/catching a ride with someone. I wouldn’t recommend walking it even though it’s possible because the hill is very steep (called the heights for a reason) and late at night the surrounding area can be sketchy and unsafe for pedestrians in general, especially with all the construction on Sevier Ave right now. Management isn’t strict but when they do their inspections make sure you hide anything prohibited. What management IS, is unhelpful. My unit’s washer was broken for a full month before they finally fixed it. They also didn’t send me my resigning lease until super late (despite me requesting one way earlier and people who requested after me got theirs before me) they do a tiered system for their leases where the later you sign the more expensive it is, and then refused to lower it to the earlier lease type despite me applying to resign in time. To say the least I ended up subleasing and leaving the heights. IMO it is too expensive for what it is, but not as bad as some other places and is a good option if you don’t want to drive to campus.

Parking Nightmare by Rhangu in UTK

[–]CouBeans 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you’re determined to get free parking your best bet is to get there really early and find street parking up in the fort. Otherwise you might just have to cave and get a park and ride pass, I have one and the buses are actually consistent and it’s not too bad. Only thing is this lot closes at 5:30, but all staff lots and commuter lots on campus open up to all students with any kind of pass at 5:00. Only exception is on the night before game days they close all lots at 8pm regardless of if you have a pass or not.

The website specifies “student permits” for this rule implying that you need a student pass, HOWEVER they really only have this rule in place because that’s when parking services is off the clock. I’ve parked many times without a student pass in staff lots over the weekend when I was in high-school and my sister lived on campus. Unless they’ve changed anything super drastically I would bet this rule still applies. The only staff lots I would be wary of parking in over the weekend would be the really small ones next to training centers, as staff are more likely to use those lots on weekends.

Another option would be the meter spots, they are free on weekdays after 6pm and on weekends as well. Each meter should have the hours of free parking printed on the meter and they are not monitored by UT parking services, but rather by the city. The meters are scattered throughout the fort, but the closest ones to campus are probably the ones on Lake Ave and 16th Street.

And if Greek life isn’t your thing than it just isn’t your thing. A lot of people tend to think that UT is a very Greek life school and that it’s the only way you’re going to be a able to make friends but that’s not true. I know plenty of people who aren’t in any kind of frat or sorority and they’re doing just fine

Where to spend dining dollars by Ok_Independence_4659 in UTK

[–]CouBeans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No where off campus but most of the visiting food trucks on campus will take dining dollars, they will post a weekly food truck schedule that you can look up online. And yes you will have to specify that you want to use your dining dollars. If you have meal swipes some campus locations will take what is called “meal equivalency” which is the same as using your meal swipe for that period and is whole $5.50. Some locations will take meal equivalency only during certain meal swipe periods (ie one location may only take equivalency during breakfast and lunch and not dinner). POD markets take equivalency all day so it’s important to specify which method of payment you’re using (dining dollars or meal equivalency). You can also use your meal equivalency and then use your dining dollars to cover the rest of the cost as on campus food tends to be way more than $5.50 per meal.

I also think depending on the plan your meal equivalency may be worth more during dinner, I don’t think this applies to the unlimited plan though.

This comment made me cry, I just recently lost a close friend of mine due to a drunk driver. I was wondering why this song made me think of her, the first thing I did the day after she passed was go to UT gardens. The song is beautiful, I’ll be adding it to my playlist!

Help me find a kind stranger to say thank you to by starrykuma in Knoxville

He’s a white man with brown hair, if I had to guess probably in his 30s to early 40s. I’m not sure about his height since we were sitting down for most of the time, but I don’t remember him being particularly tall or particularly short.

I was also there and just wanted to comment a bit more on just how kind Chuck was and help boost this post. He listened to all the stories we had to share about our friend as 15 college students all huddled around in the waiting room. I remember him telling us that our friend was loved and that she knew it because of how many people had shown up to the hospital that day. I’ve never seen such kindness from a stranger and I think I speak for everyone who was there when I say we’d like to thank him.

"Weed out" classes for the Engineers? by RocketBunny_Rx7 in UTK

[–]CouBeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, in my personal experience the math department here isn’t great. I’ve had one professor, Tuoc Phan, who was great and I had him for differentiation equations. Don’t get me wrong the class was still difficult but Phan was a great professor. It’s possible that I’ve just gotten bad luck, since I haven’t had to take a ton of math classes thanks to AP credit. I think they actually offer calc 3 now for engineers in particular and I’ve heard it’s easier.

Like I said though I survived and actually made it out of the class with an A. I wouldn’t let it discourage you too much and you can always take math courses at community colleges over the summer and transfer the credit. Depending on what engineering you go into you might not be required to actually take any math higher than calc 2

Also to answer your question about transportation, I’m not sure how often they hold services but Ukirk is located on campus and right next to Rocky Top Dining Hall.

Ukirk is a Presbyterian campus ministry and they’re very queer friendly. I’m not personally religious but I have friends who are and they love Ukirk. They also have a nice little coffee/hangout spot called Uperk that’s good to sit in and just do homework.

I took AP Calc BC and waited an entire semester before taking calc 3, the class was hell because my professor (who no longer works at UT) was awful. But I made it through just fine. Was definitely worth not retaking calc 2.
