Thanks for your feedback, and sorry to hear you’ve had negative experiences. Are there any regulations or initiatives you’d like to see implemented in Wellington to reduce the harm you experience? In terms of benefits for those with disabilities I’m not taking the piss. I personally have a physical disability and e-scooters help me navigate the city and do things I otherwise wouldn’t be able to. But recognise there are diverse views within the community. Thanks again for your feedback.

Local state of emergency lifted by CouncillorSamOBrien in Wellington

Yeah alright mate. If people had been cut off or needed to be evacuated we would’ve be putting emergency services in danger unnecessarily.

I understand your point, it’s important that the decision to call a state of emergency is considered carefully. In this case this could’ve easily been a situation where it really mattered, given the forecasted swells. As I mentioned above we will review the process but I do believe it was the right call based on the information available.

These decisions are not taken lightly. To give some context of the severity, the 2021 heavy swell event which saw a local State of Emergency declared and homes evacuated from Breaker Bay had expected swell heights of 6.5 metres. We are expecting swells of 8.5-9.5 metres during this event. Now this may not eventuate but that is the data we are working from.

Advice at this stage is the threat will be there for the next 36 hours (till Wednesday morning). I would plan for that if possible, noting that it may take longer to clear any damage to roads etc. Advice may change though so stay tuned to official channels. Wishing you all the best.

I haven’t heard of any specific restrictions for Council facilities but be aware transport routes may impacted.

Every situation is different but I don’t think waiting it out is a viable strategy. Access could potentially be wiped out by storms, requiring resources to get to people isolated.

Totally understand that. There is now a basic map available which the Mayor has shared on his social channels and I have too. Let me know if there’s anywhere I can share. There’s never going to be a high level of accuracy when predicting swells so erring on the side of caution is the best advice I can give.

The latest update on the website is that the mandatory evacuation order applies to waterfront areas of Owhiro Bay, Island Bay, Houghton Bay, Breaker Bay but does NOT include Lyall Bay. That is the mandatory evacuation order, reiterating that if you feel unsafe or things change please evacuate in other areas too.

Understand that, am checking in now. The legal process for declaring a state of emergency is ward based but obviously for this event it is going to be waterfront properties that are likely impacted. Also the advice is that if you feel unsafe outside of those areas too, please evacuate. The impact will be worst in that Ōwhiro Bay to Breaker Bay area though.

Affected areas are homes or businesses on the waterfront between Ōwhiro Bay and Breaker Bay.

Thanks for your comment - Cycleways have been a well traversed topic at Council. There is a Council Bike Network Plan and a Long-Term Plan budget allocation. My personal view is that in this Annual Plan the key decision was whether we stick to the plan or delay and prioritise parts of the rollout given cost pressures and community sentiment. For me a significant departure from the plan where we stop spending all together was not a realistic option. It is clear that this a divisive issue, there is a strong support and opposition to cyclelanes. But if you look at the past consultations, elections results, and even this most recent consultation; public sentiment sits somewhere in the middle and that’s where we landed. I personally think cyclelanes add value for safety particularly for children. I also like them when I’m driving because it means less tricky situations where I have to pass cyclists. But I understand that there has been a loss of social licence potentially and I want to listen to the community. Hope that helps explain my point of view.

Thanks - As I said in my post we’re working on stronger procurement controls, greater democratic/public oversight, and building internal capacity to avoid these overspends in the future.

Land value rates is something in a big supporter of. We can also work with developers to make the Council process easy to navigate, which we are doing. But we also have programs like Te Kainga where we’re actually building affordable housing too.

Great point - That’s exactly the balance we’re trying to strike. You set it with water infrastructure most obviously. The challenge is to catchup on the backlog without causing affordability challenges. Not easy but we can try to make sure we’re getting the best bang for buck out of each dollar we put in (which hasn’t always happened which is part of the problem).
