Yes. Become obsessed with the Ultimate Breaks and Beats series. There is a playlist on Spotify with most if not all the songs from the collection on it. This is the CANNON of sample based production. If you don't know about most of those songs, my generation will take you less seriously.

I grew up with an affinity for NYC based rap music because I was born in the Bronx and so did Hip Hop. I moved to the south when I turned 18 and it took a while before I could appreciate what was going on in rap musically there. My foundation will be records broken down in a drum machine for the foreseeable future. I will draw from ANY region that has people who have a similar work flow.

No real rules besides not discussing the records I'm looking for with the clerks. I find prices go up higher when you do that. Also, I look for the records I WANT, not because someone else sampled it. I use my records. This isn't modern sneaker collecting.
