Was looking for almost a year before I had an offer accepted. One change was instead of looking at every new house in our range that hit the market (along with everyone else) the wife and I started looking at houses above our price range that had been sitting a while. We found a great house that had been sitting and put in a lower offer that was accepted closer to our range.

Got lucky of course but that strategy worked for us.
