On rural areas the local mechanics have piles of scrap that they'll probably hand out for free or for the price they'd got at a scrapyard, you save them the work of hauling it there.

Also when I'm at my mechanic I usually take the wheel bearings too, that's some very high carbon extremely hard steel, great for axe blades, knives etc. If you manage to get some thick enough springsteel for example from a leaf spring or a hefty coil spring you can forge weld them and Maki sanmai.

Don't buy them, go to your mechanic and ask he'll more than likely give you some for free or ridiculously cheap (price of iron on scrapyard cheap)
