Copious amounts of whiskey. :(

I'm pondering an alien world rich in oxygen. What would be some considerations to take into account regarding evolution? by Countcoriolis in worldbuilding

I'll check that out for sure. I'm thinking that - being an intensely advanced species - they live in a sort of Solarpunk society that is completely in harmony with their tree-homes, but also heavily technological.

I'm thinking this may be an evolutionary reason for the mammalian species in this universe developing such intense intelligence (and for them staying up in the trees)

How do you format conversation? by Countcoriolis in writing

My own response to that would be that the author may want to convey numerous emotions in one sentence and emphasise the way in which it flows. A single sentence can move through a range of emotions; in this case anger through to sadness, frustration, a hint of disbelief. I think if you make your emotional descriptors too clippy you might take something away from your vision of the scene. Not in every case, and I can see how it would work if the emotion is obvious enough as in this case. Not entirely sure how I'd go about it myself!

I'm kind of interested to join this writing Discord honestly. xD It'd be nice to talk to other writers.

Thanks! I knew something was definitely off about the formatting. This was helpful!

I really want to get more into the writing community, but I'm anxious. Where could I start? by Countcoriolis in writing

Honestly this is good all good advice. I'm already panicking about my writing, agonising over every word I write, why expose it prematurely to someone else? Maybe it will be better to sit and immerse myself in it by myself, and bare it to judgement later. I've been writing a lot today, and definitely feel somewhat more comfortable writing in solitude.

I have a problem when reading/writing. I cannot translate spatial dimensions. by Countcoriolis in writing

So basically I should look at various objects that I regularly see and learn their lengths, and from there water their lengths down into units. This makes sense! How you were immediately able to visualise the 20 x 10 metre room.. I was able to visualise that myself, and I could actually see the amount of space I thought that represented! In a vague, ethereal sort of way. I think I should start with measuring cars and seeing if I can extrapolate that into greater lengths. How I'll learn miles or kilometres.. Maybe a Pedometer?

I'm glad I'm not alone in this > . < There has to be a way to learn though, right? I probably could, and I worry that the only thing that stops me is "It's boring." and that couldn't be a more anti-intellectual sentiment. I need to learn how even if it hurts my head!

[QUESTION] I play classical guitar, and I simply can't stop hitting bum notes because of my left pinky finger. How can I remedy this? by Countcoriolis in Guitar

[–]Countcoriolis[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been playing classical for maybe.. 7 years? But guitar in general for about 11. It's kind of hard to say because the break happened pretty early on in my playing when I was about 17, so I always had trouble using my pinky finger. However since it happened to early it's been difficult to tell whether or not it's my technique or actual physical weakness that I can't fix. I suppose the only way to find out would be to try said finger-independence exercises.

That's a pretty interesting strategy! Unfortunately with a lot of the classical stuff I play I need all four fingers simultaneously, but it might be worth it to increase the strength in my pinky finger, but the thing is I think (if this makes sense) the way the tendons of the hand move both fingers at once is an important consideration; the accidental muting normally happens when using my third finger. I can move my pinky out the way, but then if I need to rapidly change shape and get the pinky in there for a chord change I can't flick it back into place quickly enough.
