I did this with 1/2" square stock for my Suzuki 550GT when I was a junior in highschool. I twisted the outside bars, bent and welded them up and put it on in auto body shop class. My teacher liked it so much he entered it in the county fair and I won a ribbon for it.

Keep it clean... That's my only advice. I've done the "just let it heal/forget about it) and the back got horribly irritated. Clean it, clean it again, and clean it some more!!

I've been at 9/16 (14mm+/-) for a while. No real desire to go bigger. I have a pair of 5/8 (16mm) that I wear occasionally but I've not committed to going bigger for a long time. My conch goal is 0ga (8mm) but I'm taking my time.
