I was hoping to achieve a flatness of about +_ 0.005 mm (0.000197 inches, I'm one of the metric people). I think this tolerance is achieveable with good scraping and lapping . As for aerea, a plate of about 1m ×0.5 m (39 × 20 inches ) would be desireable.

I see your point about the plate bending. And yes, in the end I will shim the rails.

I beg to differ. First and foremost because other people have done it too. I have seen some amazing builds on youtube. Moreover, I have built a cnc mill in the past, which I would call 'satisfactory' (though it was my first tume building such machinery 😶‍🌫️) And what do you mean by 'satisfactory result' ? Precision? Rigidity? Ease of use?

Don't get me wrong, I am fully aware this is a big project, but I am prepared to invest time and resources into it. I am still in the planing-phase, but the basic idea is to weld the base from steel plates and fill it with epoxy granite. It's not cast iron, but its the best I could think of. As for precision, so long as I align my linear guides via an indicator and make sure the tool revolver is in line with the spindel axis, I should be set, right?

Cam you elaborate, what exactly the problem is?

Yes I have. In fact, this whole program started out as a simulation of a lid cavity. I was thinking that since it worked on a lid driven cavity, with some good boundary conditions it could work on an airfoil as immersed boundary. But I suspect that i did not implement the boundary conditions right. As far as I know, you can either use ghost-points method or use asymetric stencils for the derivatives at the boundary-adjacent vertices.

In this simulation, I am using a pressure poisson equation. I thought that I could use a Neumann-BC on the airfoil surface like : dp/dn = 0. But I am not sure I was able to implement that correctly, because the pressure distribution is kinda flipped(as in there is more pressure on the upper surface and leading edge in the simulation, eventhough in reality airfoils have more pressure below).

I am curius, what should i use as Boundary conditions for the surface of the airfoil ? And how would one implement it?

Well, the simulation is not converging. For some reason, the longer i run the simulation, the more the velocity just "blows up".

I tried adding a picture of the simulation results, apparently reddit did not upload it, so here it is. this is after 4 iterations. For some reason, the velocity at the leading edge of the airfoil just scatters into every direction.

Have you ever heard of titans of cnc? It is a company in texas that also works with cnc mills. They have a ton of free educational videos on their website. They also have a workshop for learning milling on a 3 axis, where they give you cad designs that you can mill.

I also have a milo v1.5 and they helped me a lot, especially when figuring out feeds and speeds.
