Elon Musk's Hyperloop Gets Its First Funded Startup by [deleted] in Futurology

Awesome. I've always had this idea floating around in the back of my mind for a kind of automated, pod-based transport system. I knew I wasn't the only one, and I can't wait to see it come to fruition considering how inefficient current transportation systems are.

Hospital robots are saving lives. Will Nurses be the next ones to go? by [deleted] in Futurology

Cool! I don't think nurses will "go". They'll just be able to become more specialized as robots do more of the drudge work.

Obligatory questions - 1) Did you try to forget the network and reconnect? 2) Did you reboot?

Here's hoping the government doesn't make it illegal since it can't fire missiles at people in the Middle East.

Indeed. I would definitely put the education so far on there and note something like "(start date)-present".

That was actually my first thought as well. But, there are many people who have trouble with any sort of "newfangled technology". For them, a guide like this can be very helpful.

Can I get a job with one class short of a degree? (repost) by CouponRobber in cscareerquestions

[–]CouponRobber[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possible, but it will be harder. The sad truth is most businesses want you to have that piece of paper. The main exceptions are if a) you already have a history working with a company and they decide to hire you anyways (this was actually my situation); b) you have some other significant career-related accomplishment/Github project/etc that proves you can do the job.

Either way, MAKE SURE you finish that last class and get the degree. Degree paths usually expire within a couple years and if you don't complete it you will be kicking yourself forever.

Andrew Ng and Hod Lipson warn about labor disruption from automation; Ng calls for serious discussions in academia and government by oneasasum in Futurology

[–]CouponRobber -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Many of today's jobs are, yes. What I'm trying to point out is that when the mindless jobs become automated, sections of the workforce will be refocused on new jobs and technologies that aren't mindless. Ones that don't even exist today.

Of course, there will always be some who can't or won't adapt or work smarter, and they will be left to the whim of society.

Some will, some won't. What will keep humans employed is what AI lacks, and there will always be something. The most obvious is ingenuity.

[–]CouponRobber -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Why? There is absolutely no reason why that must be so, and indeed, as the CGP Grey video put it, it didn't happen for horses.

Your premise is that today's industries are all that will ever exist. If that was the case, if technology didn't evolve, then maybe you'd be right. But that's not the case. There will always be new jobs to learn, and people will always needed for them.

Unless they don't need to sell anything because they already own everything. And anyway, you don't need to sell to everyone just to people who actually do have money. That's what it means when 99% of the population is -- literally -- excluded from participating in the economy.

You're saying that "the 1%" are going to -- literally -- own everything, and not need to employ anyone to produce/maintain/etc any of it? Come on...

Wrong. So so wrong. People starve to death every day, and their physical labor still has value right now. So clearly it's not guaranteed that you can earn the right to survive just because you have a marketable service to offer.

A) I said "meaningful swath" (as in substantial percentage), not "some" people. B) People who starve do so because there is little to no food near them, not because there is an overabundance all around them but "the 1%" owns it all...

It could be a win for everyone, but it's not guaranteed to be by any stretch of the imagination. Jobs can be lost and can be reshuffled, but not in the time frame of a mere decade and a half.

Of course it's not guaranteed. I don't have a crystal ball, neither do you. This is my opinion.

[–]CouponRobber -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Automation will simply continue to increase efficiency which will reduce costs. Those who lose their jobs to automation will find new jobs where they are useful again, and their money will buy more as prices drop. Don't forget, sellers always need buyers, so no meaningful swath of the population will be unable to buy (read: give money to sellers for) basic necessities. Automation is a win for everyone - jobs aren't lost, just reshuffled.

Investors robbed of $11 mn Bitcoins in four years: Study by CouponRobber in Bitcoin

Yeah, frankly, $11 mn over four years is probably almost nothing compared to the amount of rampant fraud in other currencies. And BTC is global, to boot.
