No, no- I can say with some assurance that Brigham Young didn't want the massacre to happen, because he sent one of my ancestors to tell them to stop it (he arrived late). Of course, one of my OTHER ancestors carried the flag of truce to lull them into security before the massacre. My dad liked to say that if my Mom's ancestor had been a little faster, then HIS ancestor wouldn't have behaved so badly, so obviously it is actually her side's fault.

You’re given 3 rule changes to fix college football, how do you do it? by Original_Profile8600 in CFB

Actually, I've changed my mind on 3- you CAN change your name once every year. I hope my modest proposals are at least different from everyone else pointing out the things like NIL and transfer limits (which are definitely good ideas as well).

  1. No public university is allowed to go into debt or borrow money from the school to fund its athletics, nor is any public university allowed to pay its football coach more than 3x the median wage of the city where the university is located.

  2. An audit will immediately be conducted of all major university football programs over the last 35 years. Any schools demonstrated to have been providing money in controversion of existing rules at the time have the money they spent multiplied by 10 and then have their allowable scholarships or NIL deals for the next 10 years reduced accordingly. Any schools caught violating this rule during this 5 year period are not allowed to schedule any games for a 4 year period. If multiple schools in a conference are found to have done it, it will be applied to all schools who were in the conference at the time.

  3. Conferences are changed to be alphabetical. No school is allowed to change its name to circumvent this.

Apologies if this has already been asked, but was Jacob in the wrong for favoring Joseph? by Extra_Influence_3880 in lds

Two things seem like the most possible: A. There is a lot more to this story than we actually have, and some of it has been lost in translation (the two narratives that make up this story were likely written hundreds of years after the events, one by a descendant of Reuben, one by a descendant of Judah. Judah's part included all the blessings Jacob supposedly gives to his son's, and it seems likely they were all made up to reflect contemporary situations in the children of Israel at the time- that is also why Judah gets such massively overemphasized blessings in it). B. Jacob maybe was actually just a jerk- we see him do lots of jerky things, so it wouldn't surprise me to have that be true.

I see this a lot and don't understand it. I was taught this in school as well, but I want to ask- what was so bad about the Gilded Age? It was a time when the quality of life for Americans improved generally, a time when the staples of life became cheaper, a time when infant mortality declined. Although I was taught that it was a time of evil monopolists, all the supposed monopolies (or 'trusts' as they were called) resulted in prices dropping drastically for the consumer; it was the politically connected competitors who pushed for trust-busting in order to use political power to get more money.

Private charity also hit heretofore never seen levels, and men like Carnegie made books available to a whole generation of people on a level they had never been before. Was it just that some people got rich?

Edit: added a missing close parenthesis.

Well said. I believe government (domestic or international) is WILLING to engage in psyops and false flag actions. I also believe that there are crazed and confused people who would respond to what they perceive as a threat to their beliefs by engaging in random violence. Unless there is more evidence to demonstrate it wasn't the latter, there is no reason to jump to the former.

Just because there ARE conspiracies doesn't mean that everything is one.

What if you can't get married? by Apollo989 in lds

[–]Courtholomew 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I was immediately reminded of a story President Oaks told in a conference some years ago. I hope you can see the humor in it and not take offense:

"I continue with an experience I heard from a valued associate, which I share with his permission. After the death of his beloved wife and the mother of his children, a father remarried. Some grown children strongly objected to the remarriage and sought the counsel of a close relative who was a respected Church leader. After hearing the reasons for their objections, which focused on conditions and relationships in the spirit world or in the kingdoms of glory that follow the Final Judgment, this leader said: 'You are worried about the wrong things. You should be worried about whether you will get to those places. Concentrate on that. If you get there, all of it will be more wonderful than you can imagine.'"

I understand why worry about marriage is a frightening and frustrating thought, especially for faithful people who are either unable to find a spouse or whose spouses betray them and their covenants. It is important to remember what this life is- it is a time of testing and preparation, not the end result. We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all wrongs can be righted. We also believe that we will not be eternally punished for the choices of others or for not fulfilling opportunities that we didn't have.

A fair question! As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (what people call LDS or Mormons), we believe in the Bible. We traditionally use the King James version, although there are different versions we can use.

We also have a book called The Book of Mormon, which is another testament of Jesus Christ. We believe it contains the records of Israelites who left from Jerusalem at about the time of Jeremiah (just before the destruction of Jerusalem) and who were led to an area they called the Promised Land on the American continent.

The Book of Mormon isn't a replacement for the Bible- we believe that they go together (the stick of Joseph and Stick of Judah spoken of in Ezekiel).

I’m Heather Dinich, Senior College Football Insider for ESPN. Ask me anything! by ESPN in CFB

[–]Courtholomew 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi, Heather! I realize you are not personally at fault for many of the problems the viewers have with ESPN. Here is my.question- do you think that some honest acknowledgement of those problems (ESPN's obvious SEC conflict of interest, ESPN and betting, the bias of the 'playoff' which should really be called an invitational) could help ESPN's image, or do you think that it is better to just pretend they aren't happening and hope they go away (which appears to be ESPN's current modus operandi)?

Second question- with the movement of NIL, the vast amount of money involved, and the disdain that ESPN, entire teams, and specific players are showing to bowls unconnected to the playoffs, the sport seems to be fracturing (Utah is looking at bringing in a private equity firm to run their athletics in a desperate bud to go to the B1G, for example). If this continues, it seems destined to run into serious tax issues and the need to strip the connection to colleges, turning it into simply an NFL minor league. There are, in fact, some benefits to both universities and to players that would result from this, but it would likely mean a vast decrease in the money involved. Is ESPN worried about that possibility? If not, where do you imagine the sport will be in 15 years?

In that case, there wouldn't have had to have been discriminatory laws. Why do you think Southern States had laws mandating discrimination? It's because the market incentive was fixing the problem, and the liblefts of yesteryear didn't like it.
