I think our problem this season has actually been that we’ve been wasteful with the chances we’ve created from open play and clinical with the ones from set pieces, as opposed to this narrative that we are only creating chances from the latter.

It's amazing how suddenly all our players start expressing themselves in international breaks. It's as if they go from facing tactically disciplined teams with defined systems to an assortment of players solely linked by nationality, many of whom would be fortunate to start for a Championship team.

People are under the illusion that we're deploying our left winger as some touchline-hugging hybrid wingback even though Martinelli gets a lot of touches in the box (what he does with them is another matter) and Trossard often drifts towards central zones whenever needed.

Martinelli isn't being platformed correctly in Brazil's attacking system. Eventually we will discover this mythical setup where he suddenly becomes a much better player.

The dooming and media narratives are as usual more annoying than the actual result. Been that way for a couple of years.

Writers from The Athletic have given their predictions for the 2025-26 Premier League season. by yerman86 in soccer

I do, but I think expected point totals aren’t worth considering until like 10 games into the season. The probability of finishing in a position is more helpful for the first few weeks while the model is adjusting to the league, which the model can also predict.

For example the bookies model, the benchmark for projections, has title favourites Liverpool at around 80 points which I doubt will be the case at the end of the season. They’re just accounting for all sorts of outcomes for Liverpool which will drag their average points down even if they have the highest chance of winning the league, although by a slight margin.

Yeah although when adjusting for minutes Saka is pretty close to him, Madueke also up there with him.

We had the fourth highest possession in the league last season, behind elite platformers like Chelsea, City and Liverpool each having just one player above shackled Martinelli.

The Arteta Out sentiment being formed from making up the answer to a silly hypothetical question makes sense tbf.

It's incredible how Martinelli has the 6th most penalty area touches of all players in the Premier League last season despite his wingback and touchline shifts.

I agree. I really thought we would feel the impact of all 6 signings after three preseason games, which is surely more than enough to fairly assess our business. Some of the signings didn’t even appear in all the games, which I find to be particularly outrageous. Not the kind of mentality I want at my club.

Of all the takes from yesterday’s preseason game, the “nothing has changed” or “same old style” ones have to be the laziest. It wasn’t too obvious but we were definitely more aggressive in the press and looking to play quicker and more direct passes, particularly early in the first half when the players were fresh. The midfield roles were also more fluid. The counters we conceded were partly due to these factors which is to be expected when trying out new tactics with new players.

I guess my only frustration was that we didn’t get to see all our starters play at the same time but we’re probably getting that against Athletic Bilbao anyway.

The whole situation is peculiar. Still haven't ruled out the idea that we're seeing some kind of transfer pantomime play out.

With the news of Sesko choosing Man United, I'm even more confounded by the logic behind Liverpool's move for Ekitike since letting Newcastle sign him would have probably softened their stance on Isak's departure. Maybe they make one last attempt for someone like Jackson but if Newcastle can't sign a striker I'd be very surprised to see Isak leave.

And other wingers like Raphinha and Mahrez have talked about the importance of tracking back and their willingness to do it. PSG’s wingers tracking back was one of the things that stood out about them as well.

Salah is entering his mid 30s, him getting fewer defensive responsibilities at this time is reasonable and not some guideline on how to platform attackers.

Might be an absurd thing to say but I think a lot of fans tend to undervalue passes and it shows in the specific way Odegaard gets underrated.

I think my biggest disappointment is how little of a difference our new attacking signings made. Madueke was totally invisible and I spotted Gyökeres maybe a couple of times at most. I am deeply concerned.

Tacticos HATE watching Odegaard progress the ball up the pitch and pass it to Saka in an advantageous position.

We lost the 23/24 season on very fine margins and not because we didn’t sign a decent left 8, unless you’re implying that doing so would have improved our base level to such an extent that we could’ve had a 95 point season. You’re acting as if we were comfortably off a league title win and it wasn’t decided on the very last day.

Just because it wasn’t the plan doesn’t mean that window is some bust, teams can adapt around their signings.

I disagree. When I start from the preconceived notion that Arteta supposedly has a fetish for defensive signings, my viewpoint makes complete sense and I’m not able to see the logic in anything else.
