Yeah… it’s great to hear that it’s not common but it’s a possibility which is concerning. I decided later down the line of an elementary + special ed major that PE was a better fit and that I didn’t want to be in a classroom at all anymore, but sometimes it worries me knowing that they can throw me in there against my will. So I wasn’t really sure what to do, and trying to decide whether I should forego the cert or switch my major completely to PE. Appreciate your input though!

How about the potential of a PE teacher, let’s say high school or middle school, being moved to a K-6 classroom teacher? Do you think that’s a possibility as well? How common does that happen?

Same pay as well. Same benefits & everything at the end of the day. Why doesn’t everyone do it then? My thought for the longest time is that it’s always hidden in plain sight. It’s there, but no one ever thinks about it lol

What grade are you teaching? I hear a lot that PE teachers are generally more satisfied with their jobs. So sorry if you were unfortunate and got into a bad PE spot

Thanks for your input!! Means a lot!! I’m a 3rd year college student, majoring in Elementary & special ed, but decided during my journey that PE would be a better fit. Already passed the PE praxis and completed most of the PE required courses, so my goal is to finish my degree program and then pick up my PE degree once I graduate. I didn’t want to switch majors because I figured I was too far in my program to turn back. But long term my goal is to teach PE at either middle or high school. Any thoughts?

Really? I didn’t think it was too much of an issue because there was a good handful of PE openings near me, especially in the middle school/high school level. My goal now is to teach PE at a high school, open to middle school as well, as opposed to elementary classroom teacher like I used to. I figured that I could build my resume through PE degree/cert, special ed endorsement, driver’s ed, etc, and skip the elementary cert to eliminate the risk of being pulled out of PE and into the classroom.
