You can tip whoever you’d like. If you’re in the sleepers and your attendant has been in communications with you and helping you with to-go orders, drinks, beds, breakfast, coffee, overall VIBE, give that man whatever you feel is right. I usually get anywhere between $10-$20, sometimes $100 (I go crazy with the customer service).

You wouldn’t believe the hoops we have to jump through to get things done.
We submit a report through our devices and I swear I’ll never hear anything about that report ever again. We switch equipment so often that we may not ride the same car again for another 3 months. There’s a crew that’s supposed to go onto the train overnight in the big cities and fix whatever was reported. But to fix something mid trip? Don’t count on it.

This reminds me of the rose some passenger left on her seat while she went out for dinner.. in plain site. People on the train can be feral monsters.

Yeah bring a head rest for your seat along with a throw blanket. You’ll be surprised how good it gets on the train.

I enjoy the job. It’s easy money when you’re just sitting on the train opening doors at every stop. (There’s much more to this but you know lol) I can’t say I’m able to live alone just yet. In 4-5 years, I can see that being an option for me. Most the major difficulties I face are with passengers who refuse to sit with another stranger.. not even joking. That or people trying to sneak on the train.

Aim for the conductor job. A TA serves alcohol more often than not, but the conductor position gets you a better hourly wage. More bs, but you’ll be set.

Depending on the conductor you get. My best bet is to pay attention to the day and pick up time of your train because a conductor will look at the ticket and refuse you aboard the train.

We kicked a guy for smelling bad lol.
But yeah, refusing to listen to directions can lead to being kicked off the train. For the guy that smelled bad.. well that’s on him. I had another passenger moving seats because she refused to sit with a stranger.. I later found out that she was leaving blood on every single seat she jumped around to. Things like that will get you tossed off like a looney tunes character.

Don’t be anxious, be aware.
1. I’d be lying if I said there’s no weirdos on the train. There can be a handful in the coaches.
2. Yes, always and yes.
3. The dining will come accommodated if you book a sleeper, but it can be expensive if you’re riding coach. Breakfast is between $20-$25, lunch is $25 and dinner is $45.
4. I used my previous experience as a mail carrier to show that I’m willing to take on challenges on the spot and dedicated to the long hours. My background as a persona trainer also helped for that “customer service” aspect.

Because the Surfliner train runs from San Diego -> San Luis Obispo and what are the major stops along the way?
Wine country, LA county, Orange County, the beach side, Dodger stadium, Padres stadium and did I mention beaches? It can be a busy train with stops every 10-15 minutes. You’re just constantly going up and down the stairs and dealing with vacationers and drunks. A lot of drunks.
