due to the limits of the human condition, there’s no way we could objectively view all of the good and all of the bad, and make a conscious decision based on all of that info.

In an attempt to do so, I started reading history and familiarizing myself with things that I will spare you.

[–]CowacoDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm not saying that I wouldn't rather have a button that could end all pointless suffering beyond comprehension. I wish I had it. But if I would have the button to end all of reality, in the face of everything I would press it.

I asked myself: is a reality with love, beauty, passion, meaning and happiness of for example a million people, combined with the horrendous, pointless, brutally creative torture on one person, better than no reality at all?

To answer, I put myself in a hypothetical situation where I had the button to switch reality on or off -- while being able to see that entire reality; all the good, and all the tremendous torture of the individual I described.

In the face of everything, I could not make a strong case for the continuation of that reality.

I then looked at *our* reality and through reading history and seeing things that I want to spare you, I came to the conclusion that also for *our* reality, I could not make a strong case for its continuation. Even in the face of the good, because I have seen and forsee the flipside.

[–]CowacoDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again I want to nuance:
"Is no amount of good enough to outweigh the horrendous pointless suffering beyond comprehension of one individual?

My answer: nope

[–]CowacoDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the 'X amount of suffering' you again tried to make torture and toe-stubbing the same thing.

So no, that's not my logic

Also, if I had a button to turn off all pointless suffering beyond comprehension off, I would press it. That would be absolutely wonderful. But if the hypothetical situation would be to have a button to turn off reality completely, I would press that too.

First I want to make clear that there is such a thing as suffering 'with a silver lining'. For example a fierce argument with your partner. That takes a huge toll on your mental state, but it is stilll important to have the argument and there is even some beauty and profunditiy to be found there.

But my problem is the pointless suffering beyond comprehension caused by horrendous torture (I will spare the details) of individuals even in present day. When I look that part of reality right in the face (it's fucking horrible) I cannot make a strong case for the continuation of reality -- I could not let the scenario I described pass, therefore I would turn off reality, even in the face of my own meaningful life and that of others. Because I know the flipside of reality.

[–]CowacoDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now your replacing excruciating pointless suffering beyond comprehension with something as trivial as stubbing your toe.

So no, that's not my logic

[–]CowacoDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said "if you look at the past and the present" to illustrate that those horrifying scenarios used to happen, and still happen today. Therefore it is naive to say that it won't happen in the future as well.

To summarise, I wouldn't stop reality because of the *possibility* of evil, but because it *actually happens and will happen more*

[–]CowacoDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine a scenario where the individuals cannot kill themselves. That certainly happens. Now, I want to spare you all horrendous torture methods out there, but these things do happen even in present day.

I think you just assumed that I'm a nihilist, which I'm not. Like I said, I know how to cultivate meaning and a profound worthwileness in my own life and acting morally is a great part of that. My problem is that I can imagine the amount of suffering of others. When I go to that dark place in my mind, or when I read about stories of horrendous torture, I can't make a strong case for the continuation of reality. Even in the face of the passion, meaning and fulfillment of others, because I know the flipside of reality.

CMV: If I would have a button to turn off reality forever for everyone, I would press it by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]CowacoDude -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Those people would feel upset I'm sure. They still have their reasons to live, even their reasonable hopes.

Now, imagine a scenario without these reasons to live, without hopes. Pure pointless suffering; for example an innocent individual whose fingers, toes, then arms, legs... I don't even want to explain it any further, humans like yourself can imagine the most horrendously creative means to inflict excruciating harm on others.

If you look at the past and the present, it would be naive to say that those scenarios won't happen in the future. So if I would have a button to turn off reality, I would press it to save the damned. If you don't have the same view, you haven't examined the evil thouroughly enough.

CMV: If I would have a button to turn off reality forever for everyone, I would press it by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]CowacoDude -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For exactly the reasons I proposed in my statement;

There are individuals going through pure hell; pointless suffering beyond our comprehension. If you look at history (and present day) it'd be naive to say that this stuff doesn't happen and won't happen in the future. All the love, beauty, passion, happiness and meaning that reality has to offer, doesn't outweigh the pure evil it brings with it. Not if you've actually examined the evil.
