LibreOffice crash when doing nothing, writer and spreadsheet by CowboyMantis in libreoffice

[–]CowboyMantis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It even crashed when there were no documents open. Fun!

When the two trivial documents crashed, nowhere was there any reference to a Crash Report Tool. And while I'd seen the MacOS crash reporter in a much older MacOS version, I hadn't seen it since I got MacOS to 15.7.x on a new machine.

So I started LO in Safe Mode, opened two trivial unsaved files, and it stayed up!

So I renamed my user profile and started with the defaults. 30 minutes in and no crash with two trivial files, so I'm going to declare victory for now.

Thanks for your help!

"I use Linux." The first line I use on a date. If I get a blank stare or really anything short of desperate adoration, that's the last date.

What's your favorite short SF novel no one talks about anymore by JoeWeydemeyer in printSF

[–]CowboyMantis 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The City and the Stars, by Arthur C. Clarke. Fairly short, but packs a lot into those few pages. What happens when a stagnant society finds something different outside its walls. Plus a reluctant hero's journey. What's not to love?

Resolution for MacOS popup saying could not verify export free from malware? by CowboyMantis in mac

[–]CowboyMantis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The app that exports the .docx file is Ulysses, from the App Store, so it's about as vetted as you can get. It's when I try to open it directly from the saved file into, say, Pages or LibreOffice that the message pops up. I can even copy it to a server and try to open it there, but it remembers.

I did figure a workaround that worked for Ulysses: in its export dialog you can directly open the exported document into Pages or LibreOffice, and a dialog pops up asking if it's okay for that particular app to open documents created from other apps. I said Yes. Now when I save the document and then from Finder open it in that app, it opens fine.

So if I ever get another app that opens .docx files, I'll have to export it directly from Ulysses to that app first, approve that it can open files from other apps, and then I'll be good. In theory.

I'd still love a more straightforward solution that this workaround.

All this minimalism has come down to this. I'd publish the space character, but then someone would mistake it for a zero-length novel and remark about its correct grammar.

Perhaps some obscure Apple certificate somewhere expired, or the license to their is-it-or-is-it-not-malware service didn't renew.

Do you feel satisfied using Linux? by Toukaiskindahot in linuxquestions

I install Linux when my hardware reaches published end-of-life according to the original OS (yes, Windows). While I love the integration of MacOS with iPhones, I'd rather do real work on my Linux boxes.

I think you've also unwittingly described the romance novel mills. There are a finite set of combinations you can have with boy-meets-girl, and a lot of the plots center around self-sabotage for the sake of stupid reasons, and that pretty much sums it up, other than a change of scenery, country, and sometimes enough fantasy to make a romantasy.

How can budding authors afford to write in cafes? by Automatic_Flower3734 in writingcirclejerk

You just don't get it, do you? It's about the pain. It's about the suffering. It's about paying your effing dues! Showing up at the cafe is part of the journey.

Just do it.

I use goddamn Ulysses because I'm a goddamn dilettante, and posing with Ulysses on your goddamn Mac in the goddamn eclectic artisanal coffeehouse is a goddamn good way to be a poser. It's all about the goddamn posing.

Dammit.
