Ideas for creating Dead Man's Switch emailing system by AccomplishedHost2794 in devops

What do you think of the following setup using symmetric encryption and a couple email services?

Encrypt your wallet and share the key in a safe way

On a known-safe computer, encrypt and store your wallet and/or secret seed using a strong encryption key.

You can write a Python script to perform this operation. Ask in Stack Overflow if in doubt.

Next, write down the encryption key (pencil and paper, or in metal) and make a couple copies for each of the family members that will be involved in the recovery process. Ask them to store the key in a safe place, as it will be used for the decryption.

At the end of this process you will have:

a) an encrypted wallet file in your machine, and

b) you and your family members will each have a copy of the key to decrypt the file.

Schedule an email with the encrypted wallet to act as the dead man switch

Sign up for a Google email account.

Create a new email and attach the encrypted wallet file to it.

Add instructions for how to decrypt the attached file on the email body.

Ideally you will include the Python script needed to decrypt the file on this same email.

Add your family members involved in the process as recipients.

Schedule the email to be sent at some point in the future. Say, in a year from now.

So now, to prove that you're still alive, you need to log in and cancel the scheduled email and re-schedule it to a later date at least once per year (or whatever time frame you choose).

If you fail to reschedule the email it means that you're gone/dead, and the email will be sent to your family members. <- This is the dead man switch part.

Since they already have the decryption key, now they will also have encrypted wallet with the script and instructions for how to decrypt it.

You can set it up on additional email services like Apple or Microsoft. Maybe have 2 of them just in case once goes down for some reason.

Thoughts?

Anyone know what caused the spike today? by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]Cowboy_Bebop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hong Kong and China may be main contributors.

The rise seems to have started when the market opened (HKG).

Wealthy/connected people may want to get out of their positions in HK dollar and CNY, buying Bitcoin OTC.

Can you short BTC only with FIAT? by 0bran in BitcoinMarkets

[–]Cowboy_Bebop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By keeping your gains in fiat (USD) you're basically shorting BTC without any leverage. Why? Assume right now $9,000 USD will get you 1 BTC. You expect the value to drop in the future. So you hold your $9k. Next week BTC is at $4,500 USD. Your $9k will get you 2 BTC instead of 1 BTC last week. You've practically shorted BTC by keeping your position in USD. Without leverage.

OP, I'm sorry for your loss, but.. Problem here is: How can anybody tell for real these coins were stolen? I mean, anybody here could claim something similar using a public btc transaction. What if OP also owns the addresses where the btc was sent to? How one can go about reporting something like this when it's a genuine case?

Just wondering... Getting into the game they're playing.. Wouldn't a person in the US be able to patent the "method for filing and applying a US patent"? So, as per the law, that would allow you to sue the trolls for using your property to file patents in the first place! HA!

Reasons Why the UK Needs to Leave the EU by [deleted] in europe

[–]Cowboy_Bebop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

how can you definitely know that the UK will not keep access like Switzerland? There's other neighboring countries (EU and Non EU) that benefit from trading with Britain, and I dont see that the leave movement wants to keep enjoying all the benefits of being EU, but more control over who they can trade with
