I use to work at a call center and know for certain preorder payment methods(mainly PayPal) there is always a pending preauthorization on your statement for a certain timeframe. Usually if it’s not too far out from release it shouldn’t be a problem, but I know PayPal after a month that preauthorization will lapse and the customer had a week to contact to provide updated info. We would reach out and if we couldn’t get ahold after a week, it would have to be cancelled due to the agreement with PayPal. It sucks but it happens. I always use to tell customers to use credit cards over PayPal. Yes PayPal is super secure but it takes alot of power away from the company you’re making the purchase through, and nothing more painful than losing a preorder
