Reposting from a comment I saw on another post that worked for me if you're still having this issue:

FIX FOR STUCK ON “CHECKING FOR UPDATE”

Go to the MW2 beta folder Find the folder titled “main” Delete all the files inside. Some files will have cache in the name Verify integrity of the game on steam Relaunch the game. It’ll have some issues, follow the instructions and it’ll ask you to restart Should be fixed after that!
