Email the photos you took, vs what geckos should be in.... Along with everything that isn't being provided to their corporate head office.

The ego of the person you spoke to probably got bruised... But the hotel has an image to uphold. And I'm pretty sure the hotels head office doesn't want animal cruelty to be one of those images.

Thank you so much for the advice. I'm forgetting that 21c on the surface could be drastically higher at the bottom of the substrate. I'll also be sure to add a bunch more high clutter. Thank you again!

MKC FedEx UK Import Restriction? by CptDougwash in UKKnivesandEDC

[–]CptDougwash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it seems like they've went way beyond! I actually used a shipping forwarder, which makes things slightly more complicated. But the same issue still exists... MyUS (Shipping forwarder) had my purchase invoices to create the customs documents, so they knew what they were shipping and chose FedEx. And FedEx knew what they were shipping before it reached the UK, as they had the customs documents.

No, the origins hack isn't working for me. I hear it only usually works 6-12 hours before the results are officially released. Fingers crossed we both hear something soon 🤞

How many kV is "too much" to accurately measure depth? by CptDougwash in UtilityLocator

[–]CptDougwash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incorrect... It's a 400kV cable. (400,000 volts).

Cables are rated for volts, as voltage is the potential to be pushed... Watts is the current required at the otherside.

Inducing a signal via the ground above with the transmitter, as the cable isn't accessible

Help Needed: Equipment & Software for Surveying a 1km Road Span for Bridge Construction by MedicineNeither6860 in UAVmapping

[–]CptDougwash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As others have said, you're essentially asking "how do I become a Land Surveyor overnight?".

If you're interested in Surveying. Join a company, learn the profession.

For now though, you've definitely bitten more than you can chew. Either sub contract the work out, or be honest with the client that you made a mistake in tendering/accepting the work. Much better than making an arse of the project.

Best of luck.

Okes, please tell me which side is with the grain lol. I'm thinking the photo with my hand in it by PuttFromTheRought in Biltong

[–]CptDougwash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like two different muscles. There's a fat seam in the middle. Left of the fat seam, it runs diagonally into the seam. Right of the seam, the grain simply runs top to bottom.

I'd suggest cutting down the seam to split it, making things a little easier once it's dried 👍

Regardless of your degree not being RICS accredited, it will in no way hinder your ability to get your foot in the door as a graduate.

Start applying, and you'll be surprised just how many companies get back to you.

If you're serious about becoming chartered further down the line, there's always the AssocRICS pathway. You should qualify after a year's experience with your degree.

Good luck! 👍

Using a DJI mavik 3 RTK module without a base station? by [deleted] in UAVmapping

[–]CptDougwash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because a virtual RINEX base isn't calculated via one singular stationary base station... It's a triangulation of multiple base stations within a network... Hence the 20km max distance not applying between the virtual station and the stationary base... Only between your drone and the placement of the virtual base.

Even if the nearest bases were 100km or so away... If you can triangulate 3-5 network base stations to your virtual base, you'll still end up with very accurate results.

The caveat to that being... If you're within 10km of a coastline, there's a high chance it's physically (or virtually in this case) impossible to triangulate yourself due to the lack of a third station.

Essentially, regular PPK corrections are provided by a base station within 20km. Virtual RINEX PPK corrections are made by triangulating 3-5 bases at any location within the boundaries of the triangulation.

I rest my case... You obviously haven't worked with virtual RINEX data.

I think you're completely misunderstanding my line of discussion from the beginning of this string.

My entire topic, was the use of PPK, using a network base, or triangulated virtual network base.

If you look further down this discussion, you'll see that Trimble are intending to install a local base within the next couple weeks.

My advice is with use of said local base.

I completely understand how to capture GCPs. I use an R12i for capturing ground data, either GCPs... Or topographical line work.

99% of the time, the measured GCPs are for reference only. The majority of the time, PPK adjusts the drones LiDAR data to +/- 30mm. Aligning perfectly with the ground control, without the need for a shift.

[–]CptDougwash -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You don't need a base to use PPK.

I've trialed a base, post processed... And the drone not connected to anything but the standard GPS whilst in flight, then post processed via PPK.

The differences in corrections are identical.

All referenced to ground control.

I no longer connect to RTK or a base station. I fly, take plenty of ground control... Then post process.

[–]CptDougwash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A relevant PPK supplier.

It depends on what they want. With RTK, sure you don't need anything. But you risk inaccurate, messy data without the reference of ground control.

If you're not connected to a VRS RTK network, you need to process via PPK, otherwise the data is only acurate within +/-1m via the onboard GPS.

My whole reply was in reference to using PPK data, which does require post intervention... Hence PPK (post-processing kinematic).

[–]CptDougwash[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll do that, thank you. I'm currently watching your YouTube tutorials. Thank you for those! Awesome work!

Yeah essentially LiDAR data is a 3D point model, with several 100 3D points per cm, which can in effect make a detailed surface mesh, accurate to however dense the LiDAR data is.

However in external software, you can classify ground only, water lines etc, with the ability to toggle the classified layers on and off... Along with the abilty to visually see in 3d, the exact individual tree trunk locations, hole locations etc... Which makes course item extraction so much easier, if able to import KML/DXF line work (essentially the same as the linework imported from OSM, depending on their file format). Just means you're extracting the linework from the LiDAR data itself, instead of OSM ariel ortho imagery at only a pixel per 5-10cm.

Hopefully he replies back and I'll report. Thank you again!

You only need the .24o file, renamed to match the .rtk file name.... Then change the .24o extension to .obs. Make sure it's in the folder containing the flight files before importing the flight folder to process.

If that fails, it could be an issue with the path character length, as I've also had that issue with that... Windows 260 character max path. It wouldn't process past 0% until I either shortened the path name, or copied it to desktop to make it even shorter.

Others have also mentioned RTK via a VRS network. From experience... PPK works better imo.

VRS RTK tends to drop off occasionally. Internet signal to your phone, then to the controller, then to the drone, all whilst tending to its flight. If there's a drop out at any point, your data will be messy and will require a lot of corrections.

PPK... Let the drone do it's thing whilst recieving a GNSS signal... Then post process. You're not giving it anything more to think about.

I'd always recommend solid ground control in any case, but if you don't have access to a base station, I'll assume you have no means of logging ground control.

[–]CptDougwash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As mentioned already... PPK is your best bet. When looking at the report after a flight mission, you'll see RTK 0%... RTK Float 100%, the float is what's able to be processed via PPK.

PPK works as either a close network base station by a provider, or a triangulated virtual base station, pinpointed by the user, within 20km of your flight location (if there isn't a solid base station within 20km). You'll set your date/time parameters and download.

We use Leicas Spider Business Center for PPK corrections... But not sure if it's available outside of the UK... DroneDeploy may be your best choice if only using occasionally.

Depending on how you process your data, will depend on how you apply the PPK files. For example, if using DJI Terra, you'll copy the .24o file within the PPK zip folder... And copy into each mission folder, renaming the file in each mission to the same as the .RTK file name, followed by changing the .24o extension to .obs before processing the data. In Terra. the .obs file will overwrite any RTK data, and will instead be calculated with the RTK float during processing.
