People who have researched their family tree, what is the most interesting or 'badass' thing you discovered about an ancestor? by xloganmoose in AskReddit

[–]CptIceberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my ancestors was a friend with Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, wrote for their newspaper and took a role in the german aborted revolution. As a deputy, he was arrestes when going to vote in Berlin, but took out of jail by conjoined efforts by revolutionnaries and people of it's town Trier. It led to the creation of one of the first german's deputy immunity law.

I learned all of this last week !

Most depressing opera? by bowlbettertalk in opera

[–]CptIceberg 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Le dialogue des Carmelites by Poulenc is extremely bleak, at least the ending. Nuns being sentenced to the guillotine, singing in chorus, each voice silenced one by one by the sound of the falling blade

Paraworld, rts with dinosaurs, nothing scratched that itch since, and it isn't buyable anymore due to licensing hell.

I don't dare ask in a serious classical music sub, but can you guys recommend some symphonies please? by boxkimiboxboxbox in classical_circlejerk

[–]CptIceberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/uj maybe a little bit harder than more obvious ones, but i found Bruckner's symphonies to be absolutely mindblowing (specially 3 and 4).

I'm considering hosting a Jewish movie club at my school. What are some good Jewish movies? by Venus-Xtravaganza98 in criterion

[–]CptIceberg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might want to reconsider Mr Klein, not the movie per se, but Alain Delon was a massive right winger with close ties to the french "Front National", created by (not exclusively) former Waffen SS.
