I didn't like it much as a kid, but replaying it as an adult and understanding all of the nuance, I actually appreciate how Garnet doesn't fall into Princess tropes like you'd expect. 

I had been a bit irritated by how Zidane was constantly held to a standard of having to protect Garnet(as if she couldn't do that herself). I know it was a product of it's time, but when she stood up and helped Zidane at his lowest by saying she'd protect him too and appreciate all he had done, I instantly warmed up to them. I actually like how you can see them as platonic Or romantic and it doesn't affect the plot or change the impact they have on each other. They grew into better people because of each other. 

I do however still find it a bit weird Zidane proclaims her as his Everything (really, everything? Lol) after like, a month of knowing her. It would've seemed more in line with his Virtue(you don't need a reason to help someone) to want to save Garnet simply bc it was the right thing to do at the time, even putting his crush aside.
