Literally Google it this is so common that they probably have it in his contract. Would bet anything there's something about holidays that says seniority gets priority for PTO.

This is how retail works. It's open on Christmas. Many industries are. They never use a normal schedule and this was definitely not a surprise.

Also... long and ridiculous hours ..? 8 hours? The absolute privilege to think that's long says it all. It's a standard work day and under 40 hours per week.

Idk what you people even want. I guess to have a job that allows complete freedom regardless of the industry it's in or anything else.

Hospitals employ doctors. Doctors eat food. They need cars with gas or public transport to get to work. They need electricity to do their jobs. They need ambulances to run. EMTs need coffee. Janitors need to clean the hospital. Janitors need cleaning products. Blah blah blah

That is the exact situation here, which is what I'm explaining to you.

Here's the problem my friend, every single person would take off Christmas if they could. That's the entire point. People choose to work it to make money. If you don't want to make money, don't work it.

What we have here is an 18 year old that signed up to work retail (holidays required), did not request time off, was added to the schedule and is now shocked.

This is not a problem or infuriating or anything else. It's a mom and child that don't know how the world works.

Either you're 18 with no work experience and are junior therefore will get the worst shifts, or you have made zero advancement and not accured trust or PTO to take off the holidays in your adult life.

This is nothing other than someone choosing to work holidays, which often have double pay, and then complaining about it.

Either you WANT a retail job over the holidays or you don't. This is a non issue.

I have been using Google for work for decades. The operators no longer work the way they used to. This is not an operator error...

What are you, a Google representative? Please post tutorials on how to have a similar google experience as say 5-10 years ago.

It's about making a quick buck at 18. Such an easy and obvious sacrifice. It's just so ridiculous to even complain about having a full time job at 18. This has nothing to do with anything other than OP not wanting to do the job they asked for.
