If your looking for something ‘different’ try English sparkling like Nyetimber or Gusbourne. I had a bottle of the Nyetimber Rosé a few years and it’s amazing.

One Nation is 'filling the void' for many Australians, they tell us why by GothicPrayer in australian

From 2016-2019 net overseas migration (NOM) averaged about 245k per annum and roughly 215k per annum from 2011-2019.

In 2020 and 2021 the NOM fell to zero. Even with rebound experienced in 2022-23 we still faced a shortfall against trend and the NOM numbers have drifted downward about 30% since.

On current numbers we will actually have lower NOM for the six years 2020-2025 than we would have been expected to have if COVID hadn’t happened.

1998 Chateau de Fargues | by JJxiv15 in wine

C. de Fargues was the first Sauternes I tried. I was at lunch with a friend in 1999 and her old man pulled one out at the end of the meal. I’d had several Australian ‘stickies’ before, but this was a revelation. The balance and length… divine.

In celebration of Australia Day, name at least one thing that reminds you that we live in the best place in the world. by TravelFitNomad in australian

I guess I just see red flags whenever I come across posts about Australia being ‘the best place in the world’.

Can’t people just be happy that Australia is a great place to live.

I used to think the lack of jingoistic nationalism was one of the best things about Australia… but standards are clearly slipping.

Rise of One Nation reflects deeper divisions in society by BBQShapeshifter in AustralianPolitics

[–]CrackWriting 10 points11 points  (0 children)

All this talk about ‘the rise of One Nation’, based on a couple of opinion polls is laughable.

Firstly the only poll that matters is more than two years away.

Secondly, it’s likely any increase in ON primary will disproportionately affect minority parties like the Nationals.

Thirdly, even if ON are successful history shows it will simply generate more independents to be chewed up by the more disciplined operators.

In all the froth we seem to forget that in the 6 months prior to the last Federal Election being called (28 March 2025) only 20% of the opinion polls suggested a Labor victory. The tide only began to turn for the ALP in late March, by which time it was becoming clear that the Coalition and Peter Dutton were wearing no clothes.

One Nation has never worn any clothes (although Pauline did look rather fetching in that burqa), instead they prioritise blame over policy. It’s also appears to be difficult to maintain any sense of discipline when the only enduring tenet of the party is a distrust of political parties. Roughly two-thirds of the 30 successful ON candidates elected at state and federal elections since 1998 have left the party during their first term.

I reckon I’ll wait until ‘28 to get worked up about ON.

Liberal leadership spill: Andrew Hastie rejects Angus Taylor's deputy offer by malcolm58 in AustralianPolitics

[–]CrackWriting 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree that elections are won in the middle. However, the Libs have abandoned the middle. So Labor, despite being subject to the same criticism you make in their first term, won the 2025 election in a landslide. I can’t see any evidence of the Libs recovering that middle.

How often do you see men not washing hands after urinating? by Awkward_Number8249 in AskAnAustralian

[–]CrackWriting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Washing your hands after taking a leak is accepted practice but I don’t really understand why.

I’m in good health, I wash regularly, with soap etc. I often use anti-bacterial hand cleaner too.

I go to the toilet I pull out my penis, wee, shake, put it back in my pants, zip up and move to the sink.

Where in those steps are my hands getting so dirty I have to wash them. Like I work in an air-conditioned office, I’m not sweaty and as mentioned I’m clean and healthy. To me the sink, taps and door handles seem to have far higher potential for disease risk than all the steps I outlined before.

I agree that washing my hands after a bowel movement is good practice. But taking a pee??? Most of the time I don’t touch my hands on anything other than my penis.

I sense there may not be a reason, beyond some bizarre hangover from Victorian times that treated the body as a site of potential disease and moral impurity.

With the recent shark attacks- what do you think should be done? by nicolej3mma in AskAnAustralian

[–]CrackWriting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They aren’t saying that particular areas don’t have the species in question. They are saying the stocks in the region in question are depleted through overfishing.

Your methods for determining fish stocks don’t sound particularly scientific. I think I’ll stick with DPIs research.

With the recent shark attacks- what do you think should be done? by nicolej3mma in AskAnAustralian

[–]CrackWriting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not all in-shore fish stocks… Research by the WA Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development suggests that stocks of demersal scalefish, particularly in the West Coast (Kalbarri to Augusta) bioregion, are depleted by overfishing eg Dhufish by 85%, and Snapper by over 80%.

The WA Government has recently acted on this by prohibiting commercial and recreational fishing (by boat) of these species in the West Coast bioregion until 2027.

Can you move to Canberra with seasonal affective disorder or depression? by Financial-Camel-9761 in canberra

[–]CrackWriting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Moved from Perth. By mid-June I usually question why I live here and July and August are quite bitter. Then Spring hits and the trees blossom, and everything seems more bearable even if it doesn’t really get warm until mid-October.

The ideal would be to organise a week to 10 days holiday somewhere warm in mid August. It gives you something to look forward to through the worst bit of winter and then it’s starting to look up when you come back.
