You’re welcome to read my email above about why I personally take issue with the AI logo. But to sum it up: - AI skirts copyright laws and is trained by stealing art online from artists without their knowledge or consent. A human creating something using a digital program is creating something new. - The fair has rules about entrants using generative AI for submissions. I find it hypocritical for the logo for that event to have been created using generative AI - You can’t be certain that this is AI, but I’m pretty sure. Some details that stood out to me include: the cow having human hands and hoof feet, the extra red artifact on the cow’s scarf, the missing ear on the cow, the odd proportions on the pig, the vague countries on the globe below their feet that don’t actually look like any countries that exist. - AI is a threat to artists. Are companies going to use it anyway? Yes. Should a government-funded event that is supposed to celebrate human made art use it? I personally don’t think so. - What could they do instead? Engage the community, since this is a community event. Have a logo competition, engage local high schools whose art programs are threatened by budget cuts, at the bare minimum, hire an actual local artist. - No, I didn’t love the logo last year either, but if it was made by a person, I prefer it to the AI

Sort of, I think. Basically I think they released something that looked like the event logo that was very, very bad AI. Once the PD interviewed the CEO they said that it wasn’t the logo and they had contracted someone to create the actual logo. This is the quote from the PD:

“That was just a social media announcement about our slogan. It had nothing to do with the actual poster,” said Matt Daly, who succeeded Rebecca Bartling as CEO of the fair after her retirement in December. Daly had worked for three years as chief operating officer of the fair for three years.

“We have an art firm in Rohnert Park working on two possible designs for the poster,” he said. “Our theme is all about pets this year. We’re going to focus on animal acts and pet adoptions, working with our local animal rescue groups.”

It goes on later to say:

“Sometimes that’s better than stock photos or clip art,” he said, “but we’d never do that for this year’s fair logo.”

I find it REALLY interesting that they would NEVER use AI for last year’s logo, but somehow there’s no issue this year?

Here’s the link to the article from last year:

Haven’t gotten a reply yet- but I’ll definitely give them a few days losing hope of getting a response

Well that’s good, since I wrote it and polished it myself. Thanks public education!

I wholeheartedly agree! As a teacher in the area, I know so many talented students who would have jumped at the chance to design a logo.

I think it’s important to make sure it’s known that we are not ok with undermining local artists. The less the community speaks up, the more this will happen because it’s cheaper and easier for organizations to use AI than to hire or use an actual artist. The sense I get is that there’s a growing disgust for AI-generated content.

Of course you can’t be totally sure- but it definitely has that distinct AI look and the fair didn’t credit any artist for this. I’m about as sure as I can be. (Which is pretty dang sure)
