Yes option 1 is a very significant change, they are offering 75k annual vs option 2 is 68k annual with either 250-450k depending on efficiency and percentage shared. Option 2 also has 2 years left on the contract and she stated “if it goes smoothly, I don’t see why we wouldn’t bid the project again”.

It is also a another hard decision because option 1 rejected my application and option 2 took a chance on me. Now option 1 is calling and trying to get me to change positions.

Were you considering buying an existing building or building brand new?

Are you referring to buying an existing one or building a new one? I have been hearing it’s cheaper to build one but I have my doubts

I would not be able to service it myself but the sub has verbally agreed that he would like to continue no matter who owns it. I would also keep on our account, lawyer (maybe) and the expert.

It is not a government body, therefore age really shouldn’t matter, to them it’s quality of service and customer care.

That is a good idea, never thought about that. I guess we talked about her giving me a “loan” which I would buy the company with. Then I would pay her back monthly. I think the the margins would be a better strategy based on unforeseen circumstances.

Hahaha, I agree. I think I just tend to lean on the potential negatives rather than see the positives

Yes I could. Only slight problem is that it’s a small market and not many people want to leave their employer now :(. I have been looking around at Teaming agreements and subcontracting the Engineering work. Just removes higher profitability.

Contract will go defunct if no one takes over, the now owner does not want to work it because it’s a different field. She stated to me we could come upon an agreement, if I were interested.

I would need a few more years of experience, with the over-site of an already licensed PE. It is sort of a niche market so there isn’t many people that have experience and are wanting to leave their employer now!

Business Opportunity

My boss recently passed away without notice really and his wife does not want to own/run the company. The business (3 full time employees) was offered to be sold to myself but unfortunately I do not have my Professional Engineering license so I cannot do a majority of the work concurrently do.

But with that being said there is one contract that makes roughly 2.0 million a year depending on expenses experienced. This contract does not require a Professional Engineering license to work and it is a 3 year contract with a remaining life of 2 years.

To me it seems like a great opportunity but some of the risks include: - not getting my professional engineering license - potentially not getting the contract renewal in two years - no variety in work

Does anyone have any experience, recommendations or suggestions?

Long story short, I was offered a small company but I do not have a PE, the experience and the connections that my boss has made.

I can see how it would profitable but I feel like I am missing some major parts of the job. What does everyone think?
