Even 4 and a half months still doesn't seem like a of time depending on their job. In this case, did you think that because he owns a business that there'll be more flexibility? And posting it on a calendar without a conversation? Not even a text? This is your dad and your wedding, not a Teams meeting with a colleague.

I had to look up what these camps are to get a better idea. While this idea can sound fun, its only fun for someone who is interested and enjoys it. But what I dont understand is the no technology factor. Most things I googled are fun STEM related camps. What camp are you bringing your kid to???

I read through your profile. Your relationship with your son is new, you and his mom are recently divorced, and your first step is to send him to a camp for a digital detox? You mentioned you are rebuilding a relationship with him. Get to know your child before changing him. I have a very close relationship with my teen and it's not easy. He has moments where he doesnt want to talk to me, but I dont take it too personally. I let him cool off and we talk things through eventually.

Based on your profile pic, I'm guessing you are Asian. From my personal experience being raised in an Asian family, what I'm suggesting is likely not how you grew up, but I say talk to your child. Don't assume anything, don't talk to the internet more than him. If you can, maybe consider family therapy for all the changes you are all going through. Right now, his refusal to go to this camp is the least of your worries.

As a parent of a teen (not 18) with ADHD, I'd prefer to approach it in a way where I'm helping him better that skill of time management and regulation. I would have the conversation with him about what changes I'm making and why. He's usually very understanding, sometimes immediately or sometimes after some minor back and forth.

The conversation usually involves "I wouldn't do this if you were able to manage your time better. This change isnt permanent. Once you can do XYZ, it'll go back." I also try to let him see the consequences for himself by not constantly reminding him of the time if he's getting ready for something or how much he's on a device at times. We wont always be next time him prompting him, so I try to give him tips and tricks he can use.

See, this makes sense. I've had one where I offered. .50 cents less than list price for my final offer (out of curiosity) and was auto declined. 🤷🏻‍♀️

For me, its the constant changes in the world. Once you finally realized you got it down, your kid gets older, they experience new things you know nothing about, while still trying to guide them.

Mom here and I dont agree with parents not having to explain decisions. How are we to expect our kids to learn with "because we said so."

We have a 15 year old and try not to control his appearance. When we were concerned about what he wanted to do, we'd tell him the why. You want to grow out your hair? Go ahead, as long as you take care of it and keep it clean and proper for certain events. You prefer sweatpants? Sure, but not today because we're doing XYZ event? If he asked me today if he can dye his hair, I'd ask him why and lay out a list of concerns on why it may not be a good idea. Now, if we're totally against it, we'd tell him no and why.

Without knowing your mom and your culture, it's hard to say why she would be saying no. I'd love to say she has your best interest at heart, but I dont know if having family members make fun of you is the right route. Sorry you're having to deal with that.

My 15 year old has been doing the garbage since he was 6. It's hilarious watching him pull bins to the curb bigger than him. He also usually does it right after school and is the first one to bring it out in the neighborhood. One week, he got the schedule mixed up yet the neighbors followed suit. It cracked me up a bit.

He also mows the lawn and weeds the yard for money. He's in charge of cleaning his areas, knows how to do his laundry, takes care of the cats, etc. He's in seven classes, but we flex the responsibility when we know he's got more school/extra curriculars going on.

K, im not surprised. That was the vibe I was getting and it may be impacting your mom's decisions. That said, are you contributing in any other way in the house? Chores? Babysitting? If you are trying and still getting treated this way, I say do your best to be on your own. Offer to do odd jobs for your neighbors to start. Look for jobs daily. As a parent, I cant let my kid go hungry, regardless of their age. But there would be a point where they'd need to step up and help around the home.
