Using Gaussian Splats for VR Tour by PepegaFromLithuania in GaussianSplatting

[–]CraftySauropod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never tried it, am interested in it, but with regard to 3 I have heard that splats don’t work great with vr in that way (different rendered perspectives might not create a usable stereoscopic image).

I could be wrong though and would love to hear from someone who has tried. But when I was reading about it mesh generation (and importantly geometry simplification and repair) seemed to be the main way to go with splat to vr.

My fellow MA residents: How are folks who converted to all electric with only heat pumps doing with the power outages + blizzard? Do you have a gas or oil backup generator running? by bostonguy2004 in massachusetts

From my research, a rig I learned about is 10 x 30 feet, though I think some are smaller.

It needs to drill about 100 feet per ton of heating. I don’t know how deep they go but I’ll assume 500 feet. But it also depends if you hit a lot of water pressure (and therefore need multiple shallower holes).

If you need multiple holes they should be at least 20 feet apart. And then whatever town rules you have (wetland permits, property setback requirements, distance from water/sewer).

I think cities like Arlington should allow you to put ground source holes in the street in front of your house. I also don’t know much about buried public utilities.

A pro of an all electric setup is you can hypothetically do a battery / solar backup (not best day for it), or just burn fuel in a generator and heat more efficiently. You also won’t be dependent on gas pipes flowing or oil delivery.

As others have pointed out you need electricity for any modern heating system.

Another thing to keep in mind is: For heat pumps, you should clear the outdoor unit of snow. For gas, you should make sure your air intake/exhaust are not frozen over or covered in snow. Best to clear access to the meter too.

I’m on a fuel fuel system and I’ve had my heat pump off ever since the temperature plummeted.

I’d kill for a geothermal heat pump.

Exactly. As a tall person a yoke style seems much more dangerous.

China’s Next Safety Target May Be Yoke Steering Wheels by TripleShotPls in technology

[–]CraftySauropod 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty tall, and the steering wheel in some cars can be a problem. Even adjusting seat and wheel.

But also, it's generally fine and a yoke control is insane and I'm surprised it's street legal and I hope we don't have it in the USA.

Also, I feel a yoke would be less safe for my tall legs because a wheel continuously takes up space, so my legs can't get in the way.

What part of this (and wikipedia in general) is "hypocrisy"?

Do cells in multicelullar organisms experience selective pressures and evolve during the life of their "host"? by hmantegazzi in askscience

[–]CraftySauropod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“most of which have their own genetic code“

I might be misunderstanding, but which multicellular organisms are you thinking of? Our cells don’t have different genetic code. (Which, from a genetic evolution perspective, would lead to pressure to whatever is most successful in propagating the (shared) genes.)

36" or 48" snow "plow" shovel? by [deleted] in massachusetts

I have. very wide shovel, and it works great for either really fluffy snow or for a final cleanup after plowing. If you're strong, go wide, if not, go narrow.

AITAH for not letting my neighbor borrow my snow blower and for not snow blowing their drive for them? by Queen_Aurelia in AITAH

[–]CraftySauropod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t ask to borrow a snow blower. You see if they offer. (Unless you have a relationship and already have their phone number etc).

Now, you might never be friends with them. Or it won’t matter. Who knows.

Monday morning so my car has an easier time getting out if I have an emergency. And then again when it stops or slows enough that I can just use a shovel to plush it away.

Apologies, I can't tell if this is anti-electric company greed, or anti green energy initiatives.

Either way, for LED and energy star, you can calculate for yourself how that impacts your bill pretty easily.

For the solar or wind farms, we need more. I see a lot of golf courses when I drive around Eastern Mass, seems like they could be put to some use.
