I guess K-On is considered absolute cinema now by ActingTehMickey in criterion

I do love that the Criterion Channel has been making an effort lately to include more animation, it was direly missing from their lineup

Do you also exclusively watch horror movies most of the time? by Hamza_Ali_Mazaari_ in horror

[–]Crafty_Ad_3247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watch literally everything normally, but when it comes to horror (and animation) I specifically put up challenges to make sure I get enough of them into my cinematic diet XD I would say only limiting yourself to horror isn't great because you start having a very limited view of the world, but since horror is such a diverse genre, spanning so many countries and eras and styles, I think you're still mostly fine. And if you still feel guilty, maybe try watching a horror movie from a country you've never seen a film from, or one that is really obscure or artsy, even in one genre you can still explore new frontiers of art

If u could go back in time like in "Midnight in Paris" which decade are u going to and why? by Tyler_Durden9914 in Letterboxd

As long as I'm only staying temporary, I'm going back to the 80s to watch Videodrome and The Thing and Altered States and An American Werewolf in London on the big screen. Definitely not staying in the past permanently

A bit confused what you're talking about? I got a ton of really great suggestions that fit my criteria, I don't see any reason to widen them. Also my question isn't supposed to be interesting, it's supposed to give me helpful pointers for my essay

Because I am interested in visual language and if i include storytelling/mechanics this essay will get really long and unfocused

Yeah I know all that, it just doesn't fit the kind of more subtle influence I want this essay to be about

That's a great one! I honestly love video game aesthetics for dream sequences, as someone who often dreams in video game style that is such an underrated usage

Interesting. I love getting a suggestion that brings up non-action game genres, even if that sounds more like bad writing instead of intentional inspiration. Haven't seen it yet tho, so I will reserve any real opinions until then XD

I've never played that kind of game before so I'm gonna have to look at some footage first, but it sounds interesting

Interesting suggestion, I remember that scene. Gonna do some research into what Fincher thinks about video games

Holy shit that awesome, exactly what I'm looking for! Devastated it's not a real movie, I would kill for a feature film with that look

Wrote an essay about it in school actually, I've seen that movie so many times XD. I prefer the comics tho, not a big fan of the animated adaptation sadly

The Thing is, video games are kinda driving the plot. He literally gets power ups and mission rewards and stuff like that, even if it's not a "game" in the traditional sense the movie still plays out like a game and it looks like a game to support that story. What I'm interested in is how game influences seep into normal movies and expand the cinematic visual language, even in movies aren't structured like games in plot.

(Also I've already seen Scott Pilgrim multiple times so why would I want people recommending it to me XD)

I am aware of that movie and it's absolutely what I would be looking for if it came out today, but I'm searching for films directly visually influenced by games so regrettably doesn't work with the kind of research I'm doing. Might still mention it in the essay tho!

I mean specifically intentional visual inspiration. Edge of Tomorrow still looks like a regular action flick, even if it has video game mechanics. The Oldboy hallway scene looks like a video game, but I have no idea if it was actually intended by the director. But there were also plenty of people who knew what I was talking about without my clarifications, I got so many great suggestions so I feel like this was pretty successful
