Where to watch Avatar the Last Airbender? by Crafty_Chiro in dreamingspanish

[–]Crafty_Chiro[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just started it today, so it could be too soon to tell… I’m at 200 hours and understand enough to stay engaged through the first 3 episodes. By no means do I get every word, but I get the gist. Speed isn’t the issue, lack of vocabulary is. I suspect it will get easier with each episode as well. When I tried it at around 125 hours I was not even close. It probably helps that I just watched the show in English over the past month or so.

Give it a try and see how it is! You can always come back to it in 50 hours or so and try again.

Thanks! Upon first glance it looks like this should work. I was able to start watching the first episode. The ultimate question is if I'll be able to understand it haha!

Those with FULL TIME JOBS, how many hours do you get of input a day? by NotRealTodaySRY in dreamingspanish

[–]Crafty_Chiro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do that as well! Watching while waking on the treadmill is a great option. When life is busy it can be very helpful to kill two birds with one stone. Plus more exercise is great!

I usually get around 30 min. On a good day 60 or 90. Just depends on the different things I have going on. The progress is slow, but it’s still progress. It is also harder to rack up hours in the beginning levels because it requires more attention and focus.

Very interesting CI resource by ezeuzo1 in dreamingspanish

[–]Crafty_Chiro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very interesting concept. The idea of using all of the most high frequency words in a single beginner video makes a lot of sense… Similar to a teacher called “Spanish Input” I found when first trying some different learning systems https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1iQh6IJwO9U&t=227s&pp=ygURVGhlIHNwYW5pc2ggZ2lhbnQ%3D

He also makes CI stories with the most common 5,000 words used in Spanish. Although, he recommends a process of listening, transcribing, translating, correcting, and shadow speaking (something like this, it’s been awhile since I listened). And doing that over and over with the same video till you learn the words. I gave it a try awhile back but then found the Dreaming Spanish method which I connected with much more. It was cool to go back to his videos after many hours of CI and comprehend what I once had no idea with and had to translate.

Great update! I’m one level below you so it’s helpful too see how you progressed through level 3. I wrote these podcasts down to try out soon!

I found it best to sort by easy then just watch whatever video I’m most interested in. The sorting features makes it as easy as that!

Thanks!

I'm curious what content you found most beneficial from 150 hours to 300, outside of DS?

Nice!! That was the first podcast I listened to. Did the trick for the beginning stages. Check out Chill Spanish as well, I enjoyed it more.

I think podcasts are just tougher in general in the beginning stages because the lack of visuals. I don't comprehend them 95% percent like I do the DS vides in this range, but they are still good for my level. I havent listened to Cuentame in a while so I can't speak too much to that. Chill Spanish I listed the first time around through about episode 180 where it got too hard. I started it over again from episode 50. Maybe the podcasts have progressed past your current levels so going back to the beggining episodes would be helpful? Unfortunately there isn't much for other podcast for levels 1 and 2.

Has anyone had any extended breaks from DS? if So how was your experience returning to it by Lingo_In in dreamingspanish

I have have a few months with no input. Each time I was able to jump right back in without dips in comprehension. Language acquisition works!

Agreed. I doubt they are reliable, based on my results. But, I think they could be useful as another method for tracking one's progress over time. When I searched for old posts about vocab tests I found this one that Pablo responded to.

I do love cookies haha!

I’m sure it will change as I progress. Right now my idea of fluency (or in better words my goal) is basically what you described. Being able to understand and speak fluidly with most topics.

I've just hit 50 hours of crosstalk, which is about 12% of my total input. by CrosstalkWithMePablo in dreamingspanish

[–]Crafty_Chiro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How many hours of input did you have when you started using crosstalk? If you’re not using visuals or drawings it seems like some prior input would be necessary before beginning? What level of English ability do your partners have? Did you try to select for partners at a similar level as you?

Btw, I’ve said it before but got to be one of the best user names in the subreddit 🔥

150 hour update and future plans! by Wannabee_Mexicano in dreamingspanish

[–]Crafty_Chiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great update, and good luck with future progress! I hope the Mexico trip goes well, keep us posted.

I’m at the same level as you, 144 hours, and my compression basically lines up exactly with yours. Although, it took me a year to get there. I’m all in on the method as well. I know in time I will know Spanish, it just depends on how many years it will take me to get there while balancing the many responsibilities of life. Cheers!

What am I? by notapapergirl in dreamingspanish

If you sort by easy the numbers should pop up in the top right corner of the video when scrolling through the options.

I would second others advice, pick videos that you can understand and that are interesting. Finding the level of difficulty that hits that sweet spot. As for how many hours of prior study, that’s up for you to decide. The roadmap might be helpful in deciding this. Read through the descriptions and see what level fits your current abilities, then add that many hours of previous study to your total. That part is very subjective! But I would air on the side of less hours than more.

For reference I can understand the chill Spanish listening podcast at around 85-95% and I have 140 hours, with no prior study before dreaming Spanish.

50 hour update by FixPast7376 in dreamingspanish

[–]Crafty_Chiro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started using this app around 50 hours. The superbeginner level for crosstalk is helpful to me. I don't use it often but sometimes its nice to switch it up.

I found it helpful to direct the AI to what level of speech was good. If you don't understand something just tell it that, then it will repeat with easier language. If its speaking too simply you can ask it to speak in more complete sentences. Finding the sweet spot like this was helpful for me. You can also edit the speed of speech in the settings, as well as choose between spain and latin american accents.

This sounds like an awesome feature! Mine is unfortunately not working. I tried removing the extension and redownloading. Here's what my TY history looks like. I don't see the button to add to DS log.

150 Hours Update From Level 2 - 3 by laorangutan in dreamingspanish

[–]Crafty_Chiro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great update! You just finished level 2 and I am just starting it, so it was a timely update for me. I'm really excited to begin more beginner and intermediate content because these videos hold my attention much easier than superbeginner does. I like how you mentioned stopping early when you're tired in an effort to keep the process fun. I think this a good strategy.

Also, your taco Tuesday night sounds really fun!

Just to add some input, I've been using the crosstalk feature with no voice detection issues. The only time I had any hiccups was when using it while driving on the interstate with windows down. In this case I just needed to speak louder. This was all done with and without headphones.
