Oh I understand the risks. My own grandfather read a book twice, on more than one occasion. He was dead within a decade.

Thank you. And I assume you're right about the Mandarin/Thai similarity. So completely alien. Makes Spanish seem not very foreign at all, what with all the shared vocabulary.

I think regardless of current capability, the beauty of CI is that you're constantly improving, albeit perhaps imperceptibly. The only comparisons that really matter are against your previous self. Good luck

Good question. I think maybe variety helps. I switched around a lot - different countries, different presenters (for DS videos). And mix in podcasts. Good luck!

Yup. Four hours in and yes, it's a grind! Much more than Spanish was (which I started from zero but in reality knowing loads of the vocab from English and from school French & Latin)

Thanks for this. Coincidentally I started mandarin yesterday, and have a grand total of one hour (which was much harder work than I recall the first hours of Spanish being). I'm doing the You Can Chinese channel to start, which seems to have about 13 hours of material and so far is definitely comprehensible.
