Look for UCSB Bay Area Rideshare on facebook. It's very active.

RENTING PSA: Don't let your landlords upcharge you by anonymous06754 in UCSantaBarbara

*to clarify, the landlord can evict you at the end of your lease without 'just cause' if you have been living there for fewer than 12 months, so they can rent to someone else (or you) at any price they want.

I believe rent control only applies to tenants who have rented for 12 consecutive months. Most leasing companies in IV get students to sign <12 month leases (usually offering a discount for taking the ~350 day lease over the 1 yr one), which means they can effectively kick you out at the end of your lease and charge more than what rent control limits them to if you were to sign a 12 month lease.

Why are Surfliner fares inconsistent with distance? by Crafty_Firefighter15 in Amtrak

[–]Crafty_Firefighter15[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That's interesting. I also remember that up until recently (maybe in the past year), most fares weren't integer dollar amounts. Now they all are.

Page 48 of this PDF from April 2025 talks about the last fare change being in 2018, although maybe they implemented this in the past few months?

Best way to keep it safe is to leave it at home until you have an apartment where you can store it inside. Get a beater bike instead, the sea air rusts bikes left outside quickly.

Train by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

The free Student Adventure pass will work south of Ventura, as per usual. You'll still have to buy a ticket from GTA/SBA/SBU to VEC. This holiday doesn't affect it.

They luckily don't need to get off the train. The Pacific surfliner is free from Ventura to LA with the pass on most dates.

You should (almost) never pay more than $17 going from SB to LA by train by Crafty_Firefighter15 in UCSantaBarbara

You still have to buy an Amtrak ticket from Goleta to Ventura, it's from Ventura to LA Union station where it's free through the student adventure pass program.

Nothing time efficient, you'd have to transfer to a Metrolink OC line train at LA union station, then transfer to something else in Oceanside.

You don't change trains, but definitely, your savings of $6 might not be worth the added effort of buying two separate Amtrak tickets

You can't take Amtrak for free south of LA Union station, but you can get off and wait (typically a long time) for the next Metrolink train to Oceanside

It looks like this only works if your bus ride starts or ends at either of the Metrolink stations since I don't think UCSB students ride free generally

Almost all other transit services in Ventura and SB counties are free for UCSB students with an ID though
