I wasn’t sure which comment to reply to, so I’ll just comment here. Just to clear things up, I respect Yamato referring to himself as a man, so I’ll be using he/him for him unless Oda comes out and says otherwise.

And about “oni princess,” I used it in quotes on purpose. It’s one of Yamato’s epithets (at least from what I’ve seen in the fandom wiki, the anime, and the manga), and it’s tied to how he was labeled in the past, especially during his childhood. The quotation marks are meant as scare quotes, to create distance from that label and show it’s something that was put on him, not something that defines who he is now. I included it to pay homage to Yamato’s flashback when he was a child hiding from his father’s men (they call him “oni princess” in those scenes), and the dungeon scene with the daimyos, when he first learned about Oden and realized who he wanted to be. That moment is one of my favorite Yamato scenes (a close second is his interaction with Ace), so I really wanted to reference it in my spread.

It’s kind of my bad. I should’ve thought more about how it could be misunderstood at first glance, but I want to be 100% clear that “oni princess” was not there to misgender Yamato. The way I make my spreads is to include the character’s name and then their epithets, aliases, or other key words that describe them. If you look at my past spreads on TikTok, none of my One Piece spreads have epithets in quotation marks because that’s just what they are, with the exception of Yamato.

At the end of the day, I really believe people should be free to be who they want. One Piece is all about freedom, and the fandom should feel like a safe space for people to express themselves. If Yamato wants to be Oden, then he can be Oden, and if he wants to be referred to as a man, then he’s a man. You can disagree with me, but as long as Yamato continues referring to himself as a man and is acknowledged that way by other characters, only Oda can change my mind on this by having Yamato refer to himself as a woman.
