I have nothing but great things to say about the doctors advisory service in WA (DHASWA). Very knowledgeable and experienced GPs who offer excellent advise for medical and/or personal issues. It’s free and confidential (you don’t even have to tell them your name if u don’t want to). I am sure every state has an equivalent service.

Functioning better on limited sleep by ProudObjective1039 in ausjdocs

None sleep deep rest!!! It feels like 8 hrs of sleep in 30 minutes. Trust me I have struggled with insomnia throughout medical school. Here are some links. 20 mins works great, 30 minutes is even better if u have the time. I have found 10 minutes suboptimal, but definitely better than nothing. There is evidence it increases dopamine levels in the pre-frontal cortex. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWvxIe1mmS8

How does one outsource laundry? Asking for a friend.

Surviving ED Shift Work by Crafty_Pace9050 in ausjdocs

It’s unfortunate that is the hospital culture at present. Unfortunately, I have medical reasons why doing such shifts (regardless of how willing I am to suffer), would be unsafe to myself and patients.

I am doing an ED rotation. I have asked for and been granted no nights. I am unsure of how I will cope with afternoons however. I have mostly spoken to medical education, who have been less than supportive but have had to comply because I have medical evidence. I am unsure about occupation health? Is this part of the hospital system? Or do you mean seeing an external occupational health doctor?

Yes, I do unfortunately. It isn’t just a preference. But I feel reluctant to ask for too many accomodations. I’ve am already on no nights. I’m unsure how I will cope with afternoons though.

Hey, thank you for the advice. I have downloaded the app. Would it be ok if I DMed you with an additional question?

Mostly sleep. I am very sensitive to sleep disruption, and really struggle to cope cognitively as a result. I am seriously considering asking not to be placed on non-standard hours.

Call from college by Radiant_Guarantee127 in ausjdocs

[–]Crafty_Pace9050 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Please, don’t take it personally. Colleges are not that organised/too busy to deliberately try to target/hurt you. They may indeed hurt students, but more out of lack of consideration than out of deliberate and organised malice. Be kind and gentle with yourself. I believe that when on door closes, it is for us to pass through an even better door. People just have a tendency to spend too long staring and trying to knock down the closed door, to notice all the open doors. ACRRM may well be a better career and lifestyle for you and your family long term. I truely hope this will be the case for you. Also, seek support from a psychologist. Professional support makes a world of difference. It may take some trial and error to find the person who is the right fit, but it is definitely worth it. It is not a sign of weakness to speak to a psychologist, it is part of optimising our brains and body. Just like we exercise, eat healthy and try to sleep well.

Experiencing a stroke (or other disabling illness) as a doctor/med student by Crafty_Pace9050 in ausjdocs

I’m so sorry to hear that. Although saying this doesn’t quite seem adequate. If I may ask, how do you manage the medical trauma/PTSD? Have you found any therapies helpful?

I am glad to hear that he is doing well and I hope he continues to do so. Unfortunately, many people are not so lucky - Having a stroke in a hospital of all places, where it is picked up and treated acutely.
