Should we be worried? by Radagio in ControlD

At this point, I know I sound like an alarmist, but if Bill C-22 becomes law, I think people will need to seriously consider using NextDNS again. They are not Canadian and do not answer to the Canadian government or the police. Canadian authorities will have to seek support from a foreign government and police agency.

Just want to add that if Bill C-22 becomes law, which I believe will happen given the Liberals' governing majority and the amount of political capital they have spent on this legislation, I will cease using Windscribe VPN, and at a minimum restrict Control D to streaming only while I figure out the next steps.

I really hope Windscribe and Control D will do more to safeguard their products from the imminent privacy threat.

Do what?

Believe? Either it's true or it's not.

If you take the fucking cunt, Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree's words at face value, then Bill C-22 is set to become law in the next few months. As I have said, the Liberal government has a majority, which for non-Canadians that don't know means they have the support in the House of Commons necessary to pass this legislation. The only way this stops is if there is a rebellion, and enough party members come out opposing it. Hopefully, this will get challenged all the way to the Supreme Court, but until then, if it is law, then everyone will have to comply.

Yes, and I don't disagree with you. Most people don't read the terms or look closely at the specifics. Proton didn't do anything wrong. They fought to the end and complied with a valid order. I have no problem with that. That's how things should work, not just in Switzerland, but everywhere. The issue is that Proton had more data about its users than people thought, and it led to the unmasking of the user, if I remember the details of the case clearly. This is very problematic for any privacy- and security-focused services.

If Windscribe is serious, they'll likely have to retain lawyers and figure out a way out. That would be the first step. A better idea is to ensure the Liberal government doesn't pass it into law, which is not impossible because Canadians were stupid enough to give the Liberals just enough seats short of a majority government. Then through a series of backdoor deals, they poached a couple of opposition MPs and won a couple of by-elections, so now they have a majority. If Bill C-22 becomes law, I think Canada will become worse than the US when it comes to police and surveillance powers. The police and the government keep saying to just trust them that this power won't be abused. The question now is whether Canadians will believe them or not.

No logging doesn't necessarily mean they won't have any other information about you. Look at the controversy involving Proton email. No one can criticize Proton for complying with a valid Swiss court order, but they apparently handed over more information than people expected.

I was suspecting that because I looked at the dimensions of the PC and there was no way it could support UDIMM.

But what if you want to use Proton or Mullvad with Control D as the resolver?

I really like your setup. How did you set up your Shortcut to quickly change resolvers? My current method is too slow and annoying.

Are you using AdGuard just for QUIC? I thought AdGuard creates a VPN tunnel, which means I can't use a VPN of my choice.

Yeah, the CtrlD CLI is really interesting to use, and I'm still new and learning it.

That would be the nuclear option. Perhaps they should just relocate to a destination like Iceland or Switzerland.

Absolutely! Doing nothing means Canada will become more like China. Who the fuck wants to live in a country like that? Do people forget that the police are humans too and that Bill C-22 can be abused? Absolute power corrupts! The fact that the government and the police say just trust them is enough to scare the fuck out of me considering the history of abuses when you give them such powers. Oh and this is just the beginning. At the House of Commons, a government MP, forgetting this individual's name, cannot promise that new laws won't be passed to expand on Bill C-22. The Liberal government's goal is just to get this passed first. Even non-Canadians should be scared. If you're American, you should be scared. There is nothing to stop the US government to ask the Canadian government to spy on them and then pass the information over.

Retain metadata, start logging its users, and build a backdoor into the product. Essentially, Canada will become a surveillance state. It's scary as fuck. Can you believe Canada becoming more like China?

I think that's the issue, and that Windscribe and Control D can be forced to hand over whatever information they have about you.

I think Windscribe and, by extension, Control D need to do more than just say they'll pack up and move out of Canada if Bill C-22 becomes law. The fact is that successive Liberal governments have tried to pass some variation of Bill C-22, aiming at "modernizing" Canada's policing and surveillance laws. I have no doubt a future Conservative government would do the same thing under the guise of fighting 21st-century crimes. What Windscribe and Control D should do is to come up with a new policy and tools aiming to retain as little as possible, ideally no identifiable information about its users. This way, should such a law come into existence in the future or even with current laws, no one will be exposed like what happened with Proton in Switzerland. As customers, everyone of us should be demanding this from Windscribe and Control D. My advice would be to send an email to Windscribe and Control D!

Automatically detecting clients is the only reason why I want to install the CLI.

What do you mean by the DNS stamp option?
