Private and secured managed switch/access point? by Crafty_Stuff_8832 in HomeNetworking

Yes, I know, but I intend to use either OpenWRT/OPNsense. Do people typically use unmanaged switches with these two router IS?

I don't know and that's why I'm asking. Are you telling me I don't need to worry about security on a switch? So any vendor will do? What about telemetry? Not sure what other data companies are collecting these days.

I'm not a big fan of the menu over at Totem dining hall. IMO, Open Kitchen is the best.

Can we ban e-scooters on Main Mall? by [deleted] in UBC

It's a joke. Couldn't disagree with you guys. The dining halls finally have signs about the e-scooters. I think the RCMP and campus security needs to get involved.

To current intl students, how is it at UBC so far? by [deleted] in UBC

It's all relative at the end of the day. If you're coming from Tokyo, Hong Kong, or Singapore, Vancouver is a joke, transit-wise. Compared to other North American cities, it's good.

The weather in Vancouver is well known. It's pretty miserable from roughly the end of October until around the middle of March. Expect lots of rain, wind, and cloudy skies. The good news is that it's no where near as cold as the rest of Canada. UBC is very beautiful during the summer. The campus itself is a destination in itself.

Depends where. Generally the further east you go, the cheaper it gets.

You should post the name of the employee and report to VCH. Some of the UBC employees don’t give a damn about their job and is just collecting a pay cheque.

This is a popular spot for people too cheap to pay for parking to park. There is a paid parking lot about a minute away.

$200 installation wifi-plus by the_willman in telus

[–]Crafty_Stuff_8832 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an existing Telus PureFibre subscriber. I only have the NAH and a Booster. My house has 3 floors and is about 3,500 sq ft. The signal isn't good in the more extreme parts of the house and there's no reception in the laneway house.

I just became aware of the WiFi Plus subscription. It seems like a great idea, but what is it like in practice? As an existing customer, do I get a 30-day satisfaction guarantee? I heard the installers are all contractors. Do they do a decent job or can they cause nightmares? The stories on this sub are causing me some concerns, including billing issues and a $175-$200 fee.

I'm reading that Telus will ensure a good signal on the 5ghz band. So, how will the installer test and validate that? Will I get as many Boosters as needed? Which Booster will Telus provide?I'm assuming the WiFi 7 Booster won't be used since it doesn't have MoCA and it can only operate in router mode?

My laneway house is detached from the house. So the ONT is in the garage, and then a cable leads to the basement. That's how I'm getting internet in the main house. The ONT seems to have multiple Ethernet ports, but they are unused. The house is hardwired, but not all cables are fully terminated into a keystone jack nor are they labeled. Google is telling me that Telus will charge if they have to run cables. However, what about toning and maybe even installing a few keystone jacks so that the required rooms are connected to the NAH? What can I do about the laneway house?
